Looking at the chance to get a possible 7 draft picks before the 2nd round begins, the Angels offered arbitration to Mark Teixeira, Francisco Rodriguez, Darren Oliver and Jon Garland.

This closes the door on Anderson's 18.5 years with the club. He was drafted in the 4th round of the June 4, 1990 amateur draft. He leaves at or near the top of every offensive counting statistic in franchise history. Having recently retained the services of Scott Boras as his agent, the Angels seemed in no mood to risk him calling their arbitration bluff, not with the possibility of Boras presenting the case to the independent arbitrator.
The four players extended arbitration offers have a week to accept. It seems most likely that the Angels will target Darren Oliver for a two year deal rather than let him go. The other three players are more likely content to test the free agent market despite the gloomy economy looming for the 2009 baseball season.

Rev you missed SOOOOOOO much of this story
1. They did G.A. a favor – other teams will not hesitate to sign him – they will not be losing draft picks to do so.
2. This gives them the inside track on Teixeira because other teams will balk at losing their first round pick – even more balking for Oliver will bring him to us cheaply.
3. Garland might accept the offer – but they could trade him if he does – but still another chess move.

If so, the signing team wouldn’t have had to lose a draft pick had the team offered arbitration. I think the reason for not offering him arbitration was simply financial. And smart.

I think the odds would have been pretty good that GA would accept arbitration. At most, he’s looking at a 2 year contract but more than likely a one year deal. If a potential suitor had to give up draft pick as well, it might just push GA back into our arms.

What this does is set Garland up in a no-lose situation. If a long-term deal to his liking doesn’t seem likely, he will get one year at an inflated salary to redeem himself and hit free agency next year. I will miss GA.

But I was reading MMQB over at CNNSI (Peter King) and in his article on the last page he says something about the Halos being the frontrunner for Teix according to what he’s heard….
I realize its Peter King in a football article……but Im sure he’s connected in the sports world..so he may know something…….but it was interesting nonetheless.

I hope that he stays healthy and gets 3,000 career hits. This is a good business move but a tough one because with GA’s retirement the 1990 Angels (Edmonds, Salmon, Finley, Erstad) are all gone from the team. I like continuity of players from year to year.
GA’s three run double in Game 7 sent me into the air, screaming in relief that the Angel jinx was about to end. That and his monster night against the Yankees in August, 2007 will always stick out in my mind as GA’s finest moments. Good luck GA. I hope that you return to the Big A to be honored one day as one of the two or three Angel hitters of all time.

You never know what the A’s will do, they may zig when you think they’ll zag. For the right price on a 1 year deal they might take GA as a platoon LF.
Also, I don’t see how this closes the door on GA. The May 1 rule is no longer in effect, the Angels can bid for his services just like anyone else, and I really don’t see Garrett getting an expensive contract anywhere else.

GA was nothing short of exceptional almost his entire career getting the runner home from third with less than 2 outs. Fundamental Angel baseball, alas, it’s time to replace that with a little more of the walk, walk, 3 run bomb. A better mix of power and patience is what this team needs.

GA, we hardly knew ye...
I for one(and I know i’m the exception) will miss GA. GA helped lead us through the highs, and very,very many lows. You will be missed. GA was an enigma, extremely understated, and unassuming. A player that would go out and bat for .265, and hit 10 to 20 HR’s,almost year in and year out. I sincerely hope and pray GA is successful in his future endeavors, just not to the Halo’s detriment, like Ryan, Downing, Joyner and Abbott.

There was zero chance the Angels would offer arbitration, since by MLB agreement the least he would get in arbitration was 80% of his 2008 salary, or just under $10M. That, plus the $3M buyout, and he’d nearly make the $14M salary option the Angels—that negates the purpose of declining the option.
Boras will look at the offers out there, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see GA sign a 1 year deal, with a base of $2M to $3M and a ton of incentives, for one last season before retiring. He might be sentimental enough to want to wear one uni in his entire career.
