As you can see from this sorting, it is important for John Lackey to pitch most of Monday night's game:
ANGELS No Way:
Frankie (33 pitches Monday), Weaver (34), Saunders (95), Santana (Game 5 Starter)
BOSTON No Way:
Beckett (106), Matsuzaka (Game 5 starter)
ANGELS Probably Not:
Dondo (28), Shields (28)
BOSTON Probably Not:
Papelbon (31), Delcarmen (25)
If it is a Save situation, Papelbon pitches.
ANGELS Good to go:
Lackey (SP), Oliver (7), Garland, Jepsen
BOSTON Good to go:
Lester (SP), Okajima (17), Masterson (16), Lopez (20), Byrd, Wakefield

i see all this
and still would not be surprised to see anybody tomorrow. i think we’re going to throw the kitchen sink at them tomorrow. of course its best if john repeats his last performance at fenway, but if needed i think anyone would be willing to go. thats what makes october so great.

Same here
I’ve seen it before. Everyone is available on the chance of no more work from tomorrow.
eyespy - October 6, 2008
We don't have TIRED arms yet
A little sore, maybe. But not tired.
vladtheimpaler - October 6, 2008
I wouldn’t completely rule out K-Rod
Los Angeles de Anaheim - October 6, 2008
I think Frankie pitches
in a save situation. He had Saturday off. I know that was a lot of pitches, but I still Sloth puts him out there with the game on the line.
Moondoggy - October 6, 2008
If you think Scioscia won't go to Frankie with a lead in the ninth...
…you’re smoking something. Off day tomorrow. Off day last Saturday. Frankie will be available, for better or worse.
LA Seitz - October 6, 2008
They all had the day off on Saturday.
I think Dondo, Shields and Frankie could all go at least 1. Shields I could even see going 2.
MH252525 - October 6, 2008
I call shenanigans...
Everyone is available, Rev. Dondo, Shields and K-Rod will all throw tonight. No way Scioscia goes with Jepsen in an important situation because a few multi-millionaires are “tired”. Bullshit.
They will pitch if needed. Period.
Hopefully K-Rod isn’t needed. I couldn’t have less confidence in a pitcher right now…
He is scary against Boston – just like Percy used to be versus Cleveland back in the late 1990’s.

I'm cool with Oliver or with Shields pitching with a "tired" arm
but if Garland or Frankie come within 30 feet of the mound I will literally shit a brick
HaloDutch - October 6, 2008
HAHAHA hilarious
but soooo true
princeton11loveshalos - October 6, 2008
I think the only unavailables are
Saunders and Santana.
Honestly, with a day off tomorrow, I have no doubts that Scioscia would throw Frankie or Weaver in there. I think he would probably pitch Garland before Weaver tonight, so Weaver is probably a lot closer to unavailable than K-Rod.
I also don’t think Scioscia is going to hold Shields back since Shields has a rubber arm and his pitches were relatively stress free. Shields was fantastic last night.
Gorbachav5 - October 6, 2008
According to Buster Olney
Over at ESPN, Frankie had a 33-pitch save earlier this season and came back the next day for an inning. If Scioscia will do that in May, I have no doubt he’ll do it tonight.
Gorbachav5 - October 6, 2008
I know I will be rooting for a 6 run or more "W"
I so don’t need another F-Rod appearance.
With that said I am going with everyone available but Smokey Joe and Santana.
Angel Aviator - October 6, 2008
why is Weaver ruled out?
34 pitches from him is nothing.
howiestheman - October 6, 2008
But...
he isn’t used to getting geeked up to pitch two days in a row. His arm is used to going into the mothballs for 48 hours after an outing…
I think he’d be fine, but I can see him as the last option (aside from Saunders and Santana)
jimmuscomp - October 6, 2008
oh yeah
we shouldn’t throw him out there just because, but he’s got to be a last option.
really, KRod, Saunders and Santana should be the only ones off limits. everyone else has to be somewhat available… we’re in a must-win situation still
howiestheman - October 6, 2008
Why would KRod be off limits?
He threw 33 pitches on May 20th and got a save the next day. He threw 24 pitches on 9/10 and got the save the next day. He thre 20 pitches on 7/23 and came back to get the 25 pitch save on 7/24.
I have no doubt that we will see Frankie up if there is a save situation tonight.
HungryHunter - October 6, 2008
All hands on Deck
Anyone and everyone is available….
P237 - October 6, 2008
Exactly right
Only guys not available are Ervin and Saunders.
NewportHalo - October 6, 2008
My gut says
Lackey pitches into the ninth with a three-run lead. I think Frankie can get two outs, though he may give up two runs in the process.
Chris Knapp's Sac - October 6, 2008
I agree,
my gut says Big John doesn’t loose two games in the playoffs and my gut also says that the Angels start hitting with RISP.
Halo21 - October 6, 2008
I am so tired of pitch counts.
Not that this has much (read:any) relevance, but I think that I am going to tear my hair out if I have to endure anymore talk about these preposterously conceived “pitch counts” that somehow determine exactly how many pitches a human male can/cannot throw in a given time period.
Baseball, God love it (as Joe Biden’s grandmother used to say) is the only sport that continues to base its training on superstition rather than science. These seemingly randomly-determined pitch counts serve as law-law that should be based on the study of physiology, not baseball tradition quackery.
How is it that on one hand baseball teams will say, “It’s not possible for our starter to throw past 100 pitches,” yet the same exact friggin team says, “yeah, we’re cool with our starting pitcher weighing a cool three bills.” What kind of ass-backwards training philosophy is that?
If you’re in good shape you’ll be able to throw lots of pitches!! If you throw lots of pitches you will be able to throw lots of pitches!! If you’re never allowed to throw more than 120 pitches, you will never be able to throw more than 120 pitches. Rant over.
Boom_Outta_Here - October 6, 2008
Looks like we've got all the pitchers tonight
