The fact that the game was tied, and then suspended, has a lot to do with it.
If one or the other team was in the lead it may be a different story in the eyes of many Rays/Phills fans. This critical game needs to be played out for fairness, so it was the right call. It was very convenient for Selig to make this call once the game was tied and the rain remained unrelenting.
The Phillies were counting on Hamels to close this out for them so if anything this call may favor the Rays somewhat but being this is the game of baseball we all know anything can and will happen.
That they played as long as they did is ridiculous.
If you have to rebuild the infield with every break you get the game should be called.
Then they got to the point where they HAD to wait for the Rays to tie it so that Bud wouldn’t be embarrassed by a World Series clincher that didn’t even get into the 9th.

How was this against the rules?
HungryHunter - October 28, 2008
Any game after 5 innings
whether there is a lead or tie, is considered to be complete. If they went by the rules, they would start an entirely new game on tues. or wed.

Not true
They started completing the games this year or last year I believe.
hauldog - October 28, 2008
i stand corrected
halofan4life - October 28, 2008
Should have been suspended earlier
Were they going to play until it was tied or over?
That field was unplayable by the 4th inning easy.
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - October 28, 2008
Panther
My step dad even called me from Texas bitching about them not suspending earlier.

Bad calls all over by this umpiring crew.

You see,
this is why the Angels should be in the WS. The weather here in SoCal has been phenomenal.
Philly in late October? I don’t know how those people keep the suicide rate down.

We stay inside and fornicate
There are A LOT of babies born in early to mid spring around here
halofan4life - October 28, 2008
Sorry, I'm from California...
I only know Philly by what I see on TV…
Do they still have Mullets?
3rd Echelon - October 28, 2008
It's always sunny in Philadelphia
What I know about Philly
hauldog - October 28, 2008
I don't live IN Philly
but a couple hours away, there are plenty of Billy Ray Cyrus mullets
halofan4life - October 28, 2008
I thought of that too
but then it dawned on me that the situation would be the same nonetheless. That game would’ve been in Philly on that day in any case.

I would have loved to see them finish the game! Mudball! It was awesome.
Big Bad , "VLAD"! - October 28, 2008
Vegas called it a Phillies win. All bets are final.
hauldog - October 28, 2008
I like that the game was called but....
I don’t think the top of the sixth should have happened…
It made the game unfair between both teams.
Both should have entered this game having defended and hit fifteen outs.
Just my opinion
