From a notice on Rob McMillin's 6-4-2 Blog, reliever Darren O'Day, torn labrum and all, has been removed from the Angels' 40-Man Roster, cleared waivers and will be a minor-league rehabber with us for the foreseeable future, as pitcher Rafael Rodriguez takes his place there, avoiding exposure to December's Rule 5.

woohoo?
this Rodriguez kid isn’t exactly racking up the stats… any reason why we chose him?

because another team would have taken him in the Rule 5 Draft and the Angels might just be packaging him as a prospect to add into a trade.

i thought the same thing about a trade

Rodriguez had an awesome year
as the closer in AA this year. Not sure what stats you are looking at. The AAA stats are very small sample and weren’t closer time — throw those out. He went to AA and became close — at which time he basically dominated.

Here you go
The Rule 5 draft is a Major League Baseball player draft that occurs each year in December, at the annual Winter Meeting of general managers. The Rule 5 draft aims to prevent teams from stockpiling too many young players on their minor league affiliate teams when other teams would be willing to have them play in the majors. The Rule 5 Draft is named for its place in the Professional Baseball Collective Bargaining Agreement. The June Rule 4 draft, known as simply “the draft” or the “amateur draft”, is a distinctly different process in which teams select high school and college players.

Whoops, let me continue
I think O’Day had good potential to be part of the bullpen. His main numbers weren’t great, but he had good peripherals. Hopefully he heals well and quickly.
