As announced on AM 830 Tuesday Night, Halos Heaven is re-doing the Top 100 Angels list. Who should be added to the list? Who should move up a few notches? Maybe Down a peg or two? The 08/09 offseason list will be PLAYERS ONLY.
The biggest, most glaring omissions from the 05/06 list were Mickey Rivers and Steve Bilko. That won't happen again. Anyone else you can think of?
But others have come since - Orlando Cabrera gave us three good seasons and two division titles. Don't get stupidly sentimental for Jose Molina, but do consider Mike Napoli's solid contributions on two AL West champions. Did Ervin Santana save the 2005 ALDS? What about his subsequent rollercoaster to greatness? Kotch missed out and it may be too soon for Howie, but has Figgy moved up from his 2005 ranking of #59? Was Wally Joyner robbed with that #20 ranking? Forget Hector Carrasco, but think about Jered Weaver's rookie magic and place in the pantheon.
The list debuts with Angel #100 on Halloween Night !
822 men have donned the Angels uniform on the Field. Name the Top 100...

anaheim angels - October 22, 2008

GMJ perhaps? or Steve finley, hillenbrand, edgardo alfonso?
anaheim angels - October 22, 2008
Yeah, but I forgot Hillenbrand
red floyd - October 22, 2008
So we're even :-)
red floyd - October 22, 2008
ill accept
anaheim angels - October 22, 2008
How can you possible forget Esteban Yan?
Come on guys!!
sothball - October 22, 2008
damnnnnn
should we have an all time 25 worst angels?
anaheim angels - October 22, 2008
If so
No. #1 all time would undoubtedly have to be Mo Vaughn
turs12 - October 22, 2008
25 is way too easy.
How about 250?
sothball - October 22, 2008
Seriously, though
It was less than one season, but what about Lyman Bostock?
red floyd - October 22, 2008
WORD!
PieceOfAase - October 22, 2008
Agreed. I would add Bostock.
sothball - October 22, 2008
Come on
Jose Molina provided some quality service, man. I don’t know…I think he deserves mention on the list just by virtue of being one of the Flying Molina Brothers. :-D
Is it too soon for Torii? I’d think so, but this season was really really solid.
Clutch - October 22, 2008
Tim Salmon stays at #1. Case closed.
snowhor - October 22, 2008
Ervin Santana
probably should at least take Shigetoshi Hasegawa’s place. And since it will be player’s only, that opens up a few more spaces. Joe Saunders might be knocking on the door, inasmuch as he has shown that he can beat the Red Sox.
jjackflash - October 22, 2008
Jorge Fabregas
not being on the list is a travesty.
Chzburger Jones - October 22, 2008
Chad Curtis
is another obvious oversight.
Gorbachav5 - October 22, 2008
Lee Stevens??
Damion Easely anyone
halofan4life - October 22, 2008
right.
no.
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - October 22, 2008
Ervin gets added
He should be in the top 5 in CY voting this year, plus he’s had stretches of goodness in the past.
Yes, Wally should move up, he was fantastic as an Angel.
Is a half season of largely meaningless (albeit productive) baseball enough to get Teixeira on the list?
Gorbachav5 - October 22, 2008
I think
If he’d gone absolutely apes**t in the postseason—like, .588, 5 HR, 20 RBI or something and singlehandedly propelled us past Boston, past Tampa Bay, and into the Series, THEN he’d get onto the list.
As it is, and as great as he is, I’d need to see a full season of him as an Angel first. It’d be the same for Torii if he’d only been with us for a couple of months, even if he’d been as great as he was all year in those couple of months.
Point is, Tex was great, but he didn’t ADD anything we weren’t going to get anyway—the division was already ours, the only thing that Tex MAY have contributed is an early clinching date and POSSIBLY a little help toward the best record.
Clutch - October 22, 2008
I agree
I was just throwing that out there. I don’t think Tex deserves it yet. He would have if we would have at least gotten to the WS, but a DS exit isn’t all that great.
Gorbachav5 - October 23, 2008
hula dula
wait after he retires
vlad IS my man - October 22, 2008
I think
we should throw brandon wood on there for being the most talked about minor league player in angels history and probably one of the best. Also, because eventually he’ll be on there so just put him now and just forget about it.
angelskid2210 - October 22, 2008
Todd Greene
was hyped just as much I feel like.
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - October 22, 2008
more.
Rev Halofan - October 22, 2008
I disagree with alot on that list
Ever since I joined this site, I have been bothered by that list. However I will keep my beefs precise and brief.
I dont agree with Glaus being in the top ten. The reasoning why is there seems to be mainly stats oriented. It makes a good case and the WS MVP helps. However, when I think of who should be in top ten Angels, I feel that we also need to consider how much of an “Angel” they are. Meaning, how much of their identity as a professional baseball player is connected or forever related to our organization. (For example: Langston and Finley will always = Angel…no matter what other teams they played for during their career before or after they donned the Halo uniform). Therefore, while I think Glaus should be up there, I can’t see him above such like Wally or Frankie
With this same thinking in mind, I pick Downing over Ryan for the second spot. Downing was a true Angel. Ryan is a true texan and decided to donn the Ranger hat in his induction to the hall of fame. A formidable division opponent? That is enough to knock him down a bit. Sure, Ryan is a better player…but who is more of an Angel?
After that I have my grips but overall its a good collection.
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - October 22, 2008
That is why the list exists
to start conversations such as this!
Rev Halofan - October 22, 2008
Downing was Ryan's teammate on those Rangers teams...
and so was Gary Pettis.
GarretSaysSuckIt - October 22, 2008
point taken
but if Downing made the Hall who would he go in as? Mention Brian Downing to a hardcore, long time baseball fan and what team do they associate him with? I guess it all comes down to whether the Angels were in the players heart. Not to sound corny but I think you all know what I mean.
Listen, I love Ryan and am stoked, even though I am younger than some of you, that I got to catch him pitch. However, his heart was never with the Angels. Otherwise, he would of gone into the Hall with a “A” on his hat. Not saying he didn’t have loyalty or anything. Im just saying that when we are putting together a list of great “Angels”, we need to include just how much of an “Angel” they were. Not just how good of a player they were.
okay im done.
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - October 22, 2008
who stop right there
is that a TYPO or did youactually get to CATCH him pitching? or should that read WATCH?
Rev Halofan - October 23, 2008
And to add to things
The idea of someone’s “Angelness” is VERY subjective. Langston so regularly disappointed me and the franchise – especially in any game that halfway mattered – that I find it hard to even acknowledge him. Meanwhile Glaus wins us the World Series and he does not meet someone else’s “Angelness” criteria… weird.
Rev Halofan - October 23, 2008
Also, he mentioned Frankie
who, despite recent comments that he’d like to stay an Angel, has indicated all year that he was going to test free agency (translation: I’m going to whoever pays me the big bucks). I could foresee Frankie slipping quite a bit down this list in the coming months and years once he signs with another team.
Gorbachav5 - October 23, 2008
okay...i concede
glaus is pretty damn important and the more i think about it and look at his career, he probably is totally an “angel” at heart. I think it more that I was never really convinced nor emotionally attached to glaus. But you’ve convinced me otherwise.
However, my comments on Ryan v. Downing and there “Angelness” stands. Obviously its very subjective but that doesn’t mean it shouldnt be taken into account. Besides, I think it says it all that Ryan went into the Hall with a team that he didn’t even do his best pitching with nor spend a majority of career with. Downing before Ryan. I stick to that.
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - October 24, 2008
One of my favorite old, old, old time Angels was Rocky Bridges.
He only played one season for the Angels (their inaugural season) then retired, and he wasn’t all that great.
But he has some great quotes (On his career, and relative lack of success in the majors) “I’ve been a paid spectator at some pretty interesting events, and I’ve always had a good seat. I guess they figured there was no point in carrying a good thing too far.” , and…how can you dislike a guy with that name that looked like this?
sothball - October 22, 2008
maybe it would be good luck if we added Mark Teixera to the list
UCIHalo - October 22, 2008
Rod Carew
I always thought Carew should be higher on the list. He was the epitome of the Angels for me when I was growing up.
matthiasstephan - October 23, 2008
Who are some old time Angels from the 60's that could be on the list?
Way before my time, but I notice how recent heavy the list seems to be.
Big Bad , "VLAD"! - October 23, 2008
How about Big Klu?
Ted Kluszewski
red floyd - October 23, 2008
It is what it is.
The value of several of those guys instilling the proper professional culture within a brand-new franchise is way underappreciated, and clouded by the below par on-the-field performance of the team as a whole during those years.
Stirrups - October 23, 2008
GA
Should be #1. The Kingfish…a sentimental #1!
tmat - October 23, 2008
I'm sorry, the case has already been closed on this. See above.
snowhor - October 24, 2008
Hey
How about Ron Romanick, Luis Sanchez, and Rob Wilfong?!?
tmat - October 23, 2008
#1 Garret Joseph Anderson
Salmon’s a sweet guy, but GA is the best player in this franchise’s history.
GA4Ever - October 23, 2008
So, since PLAYERS ONLY, the list is going to drop
Bill Bavasi, Bill Rigney, Bill Stoneman, Arte Moreno, Gene Mauch, and Mike Scioscia? (And dropping Buck Rogers down the list after removing from consideration his contributions as manager?)
Stirrups - October 23, 2008
Autry is out too
halofan4life - October 24, 2008
You must be too young to have seen Ol' Gene cruisin' the Strand.
Autry wuz a playa!
Stirrups - October 24, 2008
I must admit that I never saw him cruisin the stands.
But an exception should be made in his case. If his “Playa”-ness doesn’t get him on the list, his “retired number” should.
How many other owners in the MLB have a retired number.
