I think getting Lackey resigned long-term is priority 1B right now. If we don’t have offense it doesn’t matter how great the pitching staff is as shown in the last couple playoff series.
I love Big John he is definitely a keeper. His game 4 performance should have brought the Angels back home to game 5 if only good HK would have showed up.
Do it. He’s the anchor of this pitching staff. I think Santana’s great but needs someone else to be the big dog on this staff to do his best, and he’s an example of how to lead a pitching staff. I suppose you could jsut pick up the option, but I’d hope the Angels would renegotiate for at least another 3-4 years.
The contract Sabathia signs is going to be huge for Lackey. With the way FA pitching has been going, he’s going to want 5 or 6 years at least $15 million per. That’s a lot of cash for one pitcher. I think Lackey will be good for awhile, but he’s already lost some of his fastball and his peripherals took a hit last year.
With Santana, Saunders, and Weaver, that’s a decent 1-2-3 right there, with Adenhart hopefully figuring in as well. I like John, but I’m just not sure about a huge extension.
Pick up his option this year and see what he wants. If you’re going to sign him to an extension, do it now, before Sabathia breaks someone’s checkbook.
If Lackey agrees to that, do it in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, Jon Garland, a number 3 starter in his best year, just got done with a roughly $10 million a year contract. The Angels paid Bartolo $13 million a year in a contract signed 4 years ago.
I just don’t see Lackey taking less than $14 million, and probably $15 million per.
I forgot that Johan Santana got 6 years, at $137.5 million. Lackey’s not going to get quite that much, but I guess $105 for six years is probably not out of the question. That’s about $17.5 million per.
Just sign everyone, raise than ticket prices and consession prices to pay for their salaries. Might as well just get it over with. It’s not like prices aren’t going up every damn year anyways. Big John is the Mark Teixeira of the pitching staff. we need Tex as the future centerpiece of our offense, and Lackey NEEDS to be the centerpiece of this pitching staff, no questions asked.
in-house or in free agency the next couple of years I think you gotta tear up the option and come up with some kind of 5 year deal. You’d get Lackey from ages 30-34, hopefully most of them prime years and by the end of it hopefully Santana and Saunders can take over as the lead dogs. BUT if you’re Lackey, no matter if Tex is here or whatever the Angels tell you about upgrading the offense, this close to free agency you might just want the Angels to pick up the option then come back next year breathing fire, in contract-year overdrive to earn a better deal since it might be your best chance at getting it.
…5/75 tops though. If not, exercise the option, hope for less bloody results next year, and re-sign him then, although it will likely cost more depending on the type of year he has.

Plus, I remember on more than one occasion him going to the distance and getting very little run support and ended up with an Loss when his performance was definitely WIN material.
I have total confidence that Lack will continue to dominate for years to come. We should remember the drawbacks of this season though and I dont think it would be totally unwise to worry at least a tiny bit about those things continuing to plague him in the next few years when determining what we re-sign him for. However, as I stated early…Lack is all Halo…lets keep it that way.

I don’t understand your shortstop comment. Cabrera was not any better than either Aybar or Izturis this year. Garland was far more valuable to the club than O.C. would have been throughout the season. The Angels have six shortstops already; the absolute last thing they need is a seventh (or a new sixth, since you advocate trading Aybar). As for getting rid of Eckstein, that’s why they got Cabrera in the 1st place, and he was better than Eckstein for those three years.
I think definitely need him back next year he still had a fantastic year even after missing the better part of two months! And he was a beast in the playoffs… if i am tony r. the first thing i do the next time i have lunch with arte is to liquify his stock market portfolio (which is pretty much guaranteed to be doing but losing him money right now) and make sure we have enough money to sign tex and lackey to whatever they need. these guys are the future of our veterans. We have always been a team filled with young talent (case and point 2002) but without wise veterans in the dugout they are sure to collapse. Tex and John will provide that solid veteran presence for years to come (i know tex is still young but soon enough he will be the core of this team).
