With an Angel 6 1/2 game lead (6 in the loss column) by all means I am rooting for the Mariners over the Yankees. Seattle is my second favorite team in the A.L. (4th overall: Angels, Dodgers, Padres, Mariners). The Yankees are my least favorite team, with the Texas Rangers second from the bottom. The Florida Marlins are the third team from the bottom by virtue of their not defending their 1997 World Championship. I know, boycott the Blockbuster video rental chain.

Ideally Seattle will win the A.L. wild card. Failing that, a couple Seattle wins over the Yanks will help the Bosox take the A.L. East.

Several of my friends in Kathmandu are Red Sox fans. Indeed the field at Phora Durbar is nicknamed "Don Clark Memorial Field" after Don Clark, the just retired (July 2007) USAID Chief of Station. Clark's claim to fame is shaking hands with Ted Williams a half century ago.

I cannot go to India without wearing a Cleveland Indians cap. My short list of favorite A.L. teams is: Angels, Mariners, Red Sox, and Indians.

My fab four in the N.L. are: Dodgers, Padres, Cubs, and Astros. Why the Astros? Their 1980 squad was the most similar team I have seen to the 1965 Dodgers regarding pitching, speed, and lack of power. We hung around southern California for an extra three days in June in order to see a couple Astros @ Angels games during the Craig Biggio farewell tour.

Nine miles east of the Big A. Over the years I have seen 27 of the 30 major league teams play at home. I am only missing Colorado, Florida, and Texas. One caveat: I have not seen the Washington Nationals play a home game. In July 1989 I saw the Bob Rodgers led Expos sweep a four game series against the Reds in Montreal. The highlight was a 6-5 come-from-behind win that included a 3-run home run by Rex Hudler and a 2-run walk-off home run by Damaso Garcia (both off of John Franco) in the bottom of the 9th inning.
