Garret Anderson Hits 450th Double of Career

Going into Thursday's game with Oakland, there was a four-way tie for 80th place on baseball's All-Time Doubles list:

Hall-of-Famer Joe Morgan
Bernie Williams
Steve Finley
Garret Anderson

Each baseball great had hit 449 Doubles in his career.

Tonight, Garret hit the 450th Double of his career, broke the logjam and took over sole possession of 80th place on the All Time List.

Congratulations, Garret.

G.A.
i love your lazy ass......congrats homie on the milestone.
But!
If he hustled than many of those career doubles would have been triples, and he wouldn't have reached 450 doubles by now. No?
I think your joking. But I thought I'd refute
the GA is lazy perception.

I took career triples divided by career hits and got this:

Glaus  .00820
Salmon .01434
GA     .01445
A-Rod  .01190

GA converted about 14% of his hits into triples.  About 2 percent more than A-Rod.

1.4% ?
Whoops. Yeah. 1.4%
Wait a second. Now that you mention it
GA hits 22% MORE triples per H than A-Rod.
That WAS a joke, playing quirky with logic.
But, GA does not hustle. As great as his numbers are, and they are great, they could have been off the charts if he just MOVED HIS ASS!
he puts the GA
in lollyGAg
Unless he blew his hammies hauling ass
meh.
World-class track runners blowing out hammies? Totally understandable. Those folks are literally trying to run beyond the ability of their human form.

Football players blowing out hammies, barely tolerable. Lots of stress on the body, football is, so I give them a pass. Sometimes.

Baseball players blowing out hammies? Inexcusable. It doesn't take much to keep the body in shape, loose and all stretched out enough to deal with the lack of rigor that is baseball. Compare with basketball.

Congenital conditions excepted to all of the above.

i disagree
anybody who sprints is susceptible to hammy injury. should baseball players be able to limit the risk by staying loose? sure, but that's not going to eliminate the risk altogether.

as much as we are all frustrated by the Cadillac Escalade's cruising speed, i think it's one of the reasons he had been able to stay off the DL for almost his entire career, enabling us to enjoy his consistent hitting for such a long time.

did anybody see GA race down the line on a cheap grounder to 2nd in the 9th inning? he was pumping his arms and trying to beat it out. yes, that was in the 9TH INNING.

So we know he is capable!
Doesn't evidence of superior hustle actually degrade those arguments which imply that he is ALWAYS hustling?

As for risk aversion, sure, but I was not speaking in the context of absolutes. I was speaking in the context of careers. Long term.

oh hell
I pulled mine by slipping down the stairs (sober, thank you very much) and couldn't walk for 2 days. It was painful!
You should have stretched out
before going down those stairs. Or, at the very least, had a couple of beers!
probably would have been better off
with a few beers. I would have fallen rather than tried to prevent the slide!!
Statistic fail to correlate stretching with
hammy injuries.  It's sketchy

RE: track guys vs. base runners and football players

Track runners are LESS susceptible to hammy injuries because their movement is simpler and more predictable.  They are also not trying to focus on anything else except their balance and timing and running.

Wow.
I don't even know where one would start to find comparative statistical information concerning hamstring injuries between athletes from various major sports. A tip of the hat to you!

FYI, about sprinters, you might want to know that some other experts disagree with your research. Note the opening paragraph: "Sprinting subjects these muscles to high tension loads and sudden tears can occur. The recent Olympic games in Atlanta saw several sprinters go down in agony with acute hamstring injuries."

Maybe I'm wrong about the sprinters
but the part about stretching preventing injury is definitely true. Here's an excerpt from an article that suggests heat works better.

Many researchers have suggested that stretching regimens represent the ideal method for improving hamstring flexibility. While this approach certainly seems to be reasonable, the research concerning the effect of stretching on hamstring elasticity has been equivocal. For example, one investigation determined that 30 seconds of static stretching significantly improved hamstring flexibility (4), while another study found that a combination of static and proprioceptive-neuromuscular-facilitation stretching improved torque production by the hamstrings but failed to enhance hamstring flexibility at all (5).

More data
Another preventive approach
that is very unlikely to yield
success is stretching. Almost all of
the studies that correlated
strength deficits with injury risk
failed to find a correlation of
flexibility with injury risk
(Bennell et al, 1998, Burkett,
1970, Orchard et al, 1997,
Yamamoto, 1993, Heiser et al,
1984). Also, recent randomised
controlled trails have placed
major doubt on stretching as a
method for injury prevention
(Herbert and Gabriel, 2002,
Shrier, 1999). A major
confounder for flexibility studies
is that athletes with greater
`speed' show greater flexibility
and almost certainly have a
higher injury risk. Distance
athletes have reduced hamstring
flexibility and may actually may
derive a performance benefit
from this (Wang et al, 1993,
Jones, 2002), while it is known
that hamstring injury incidence
declines as running speed is
reduced (Bennell and
Crossley, 1996)
Oh ffs
Google google google google and more fooking google.
He crushed that ball, too
I might not always like him, but congratulations
Good work GA
I don't have the chance to see GA play as much as many of you. But I have always thought that he does turn on the speed and run hard when he has to. For example, in the Seattle series, he hit a ball to the first baseman on a hop, he ran very hard and almost beat it out. The next at bat he hit a ball just to the right of the mound, he barely ran. He is also a guess hitter so he often seems to have a lazy swing when he guesses wrong (I remember these discussions about GA when he was a rookie). But he has been a great Angel, and has a ring and the key hit in game 7 of the WS to show for it.
Congrats to G.A.
IMO, the best career Angel in club history, and certainly my favorite to follow.  Here's to several more years of healthy play on the field and consistent production like the Garret of old.  Onward to 3,000 hits and 500+ doubles, Garret.
Congrats GA
On a side note, Mike Scioscia is going for his 450th Double-Double tonight.
i didn't know Scioscia played basketball
Yes
He gets double-doubles in Double Dribble while eating a Double Double.
Scioscia
always struck me as more of an NBA JAM type of guy.
just don't forget the fries
You are ALL wrong....
Mikey's fav food is tollhouse cookies.....
Nice work, GA.
With your next double, you will surpass Angels legend Steve Finley.
11 More Doublesthis year....
and GA will finish up the year 73rd on the all time doubles list.
congrats GA!!
anyone know where he is on the all time "Ground Out to 2B?"
