Mariner's Season Not Over

Blame of the Game: Jered Weaver

Come back or no comeback, you give up six runs to the team closest to us, you get the blame.

In the scheme of things, Seattle really had so much more to lose than us.

speier
second time he lets a game slip away in extras
Orlando Cabrera - BOTG
Although, I don't think it was really anyone's fault. It was just a matter of time. But if I had to choose, it was OCab
OC
speier
although it's hard to give it to him when they get two infield singles.  Co blame to WTY
Weaver
2nd horrible game in a row
WTY
He set the tone for the game. He wasn't solid, he missed the zone and allowed way too many runs too soon in the game. If he had done better, the later plays wouldn't have mattered as much.
Fangraphs says
Speier, but in this case I absolutely agree with WTY. If he even puts out a quality start the Angels win it in regulation.
Nah
I say GMJ.  Weaver walked one and no HR's, I believe.

But balls were dropping in all over the place around CF.

MTY is a flyball pitcher, he needs someone excellent out there.

GMJ?
Blame of the game?

Are you fucking kidding me?

Way too many possible people to blame, but...
I say no blame this game. A lot of people made key contributions and also pushed us towards the loss.
Maicer Izturis
0-4 and he dropped the double play ball in the 7th that led to Seattle's 6th run.
um
weaver and speier both pitched bad.
Wow!
I'm not here to talk shit. That was a hard fought game by both teams. One team had to win.
Did anyone hear Mota just say goodnight?
I don't think he likes not being in the booth.

He sounded crabby.

Okay, let's talk positive here. Melvin is right.
Let's talk about why we're going to win the division.

Conversely, let's also talk about how the Mariners are going to choke.

Melvin needs a slumpbuster.
The guy has turned into a softy.

I hope that description isn't too negative for him.

haha
no shit huh.
Great Game
I blame no one.
Weaver
What happened to his control and command?  Oh well...to Oakland!
BOTG
Nathan Haynes...

3 pitch strikeout with the bases loaded???  Weak.

Mike Scioscia
for calling upon Haynes to pinch-hit.  When's the last time he even saw live pitching?  And they call upon him to hit a fly ball?  Sorry, I like Mathis' chances a heck of a better there.
Scoscia
WTF was he doing taking Mathis out of the game in favor of Haynes?  When was the last time Haynes got an AB?
Sosh
Also he did not get Oliver on the mound early enough to avoid one extra earned run of Weaver.
OC or weaver
give it to a couple of players
have to admit
gmj's two run shot was pretty damn sweet. especially off ol "game over" JJ
WTY
Bad start by any definition.

Assist to the 1B ump for calling Vladdy out despite him being safe.

In regards to the Vlad play
I never saw any real replays.  Was he out or safe?  Either way, it was a dumb, dumb, dumb slide.
Naw he was out.
But if he runs instead of slides he probably beats the throw.
That's what I figured
and they told me in T-Ball not to slide into first...especially feet-first.
Isn't
That how Johnny Rivers got hurt in the first place?
He was safe but we can still blame him because
if he didn't slide he probably would have been CALLED safe.
naw, he was out..
I think the replays were pretty clear.

things I learned in little league:

  1. on a flyball, first step is always back
  2. pay attention to the game and not the birds in the sky
3)never slide into first
Not paying attention...
...to the birds in the sky almost cost Dave Winfield his freedom.
poll
do one.
Mike Scioscia for pinch hitting Haynes.
That kid has not gotten any playing time so why put him out there with all that pressure. He should have used Matt Brown who is a power hitter and could have gotten us at least a sac fly.
i felt the same
but speier was out there for one inning and was well rested, i mean if it was the middle of his third inning i can see taking the blame off him
quinlan
I would have used Q, either though it was a right-hander, the guy has more experience at pinch hitting and could have maybe produced a fly ball.
Some perspective in light of this loss:
It could be a lot worse, folks. Think of the bridge collapse in Minneapolis. A lot of those people were on their to the HHH-dome to see the Twinkies. Fellow baseball fans.
dang
that was a heart breaker...
and i missed the part where they came back
ugh. a big f u to myself.
Willits
  1. 3 LOB which was tied for the most of any angel player.
  2.  0-4 on the night
  3.  Had a chance with bases loaded and 2 outs to let a pitch way inside hit him to score the go ahead run
And he grounded out
on a clear ball 4.
Scioscia
I can't think of anyone else... maybe napoli? for being hurt?
GA
Those weak ass defensive plays early on, proved the difference.
PS
Don't care about the HR.

That is expected, once in a while.

However, his weak ass plays on balls hit to LF caused at least 1-3 extra runs to be scored.

Easy BOTG.

(FYI, I am a huge GA supporter, and saw his effort in spring training to be a sign of his return.  I still believe he'll be incredibly important to this team's pennant run.  HOWEVER, tonight, he is BOTG for his poor defensive plays.)

2nd inning? It bounced off the wall.
If Anderson's defense
is the reason we lost, then don't blame him.  Blame Scioscia, because he's the one who puts Anderson in left field and wastes the speed of Reggie Willits at DH.  Just like he wasted Juan Rivera's arm at DH so many times last year.  This is incredibly stupid, especially with flyball Weaver on the mound.
I think
That Weaver should get it. However how about The umpires (including our old pal Eddings) 2 plays changed the outcome Vlad out at home and Vlad out at  First, both looked pretty close, I think The one at first he was definitely safe and the one at home could have gone either way. The one at first though cost a run and brought a stop to a productive inning for us
I disagree
both were close plays, but I felt he was out after looking at the replays.
Nathan Haynes had a downer AB...
I was pretty ticked off at him after not being able to hit the ball into play...  Boo.
How about a Blame on Doug Eddings?
I heard he took his sweet time making the call on the Ichiro to Johjima play on Vladdy.  Did he blow the call as usual (I didn't see the play)?
He was just making sure Johjima had the ball
Crap... did I just defend Doug Eddings?!!
I thought he was safe
but the ball arrived before he slid in to home base.
A couple of more things
It was a great game but:
1-why not bring in Speier in the 7th (although the way he pitched in the 12th???)or bring in a rested Shields at that point.
2-why not use Quinlan as a pinch hitter instead of Haynes (I know Q is a righty but he has more experience)
3-why not, walk Ichiro with first base open in the bottom of the 8th?
I agree 100%
I said the same thing to myself last night. Ichiro was killing us last night and I would have walked him. Sosh just doesn't play the percentages sometimes and I don't get it
OC and Sosh
There is no excuse for hitting a pop up behind homeplate with bases loaded and one out. Horrible at bat and I expect more from a veteran.

As to Sosh whay in the world did Haynes pinch hit. My wife, who doesn't follow basebal as much as I do couldn't understand the decision. I can't remember the last time the guy had an at bat. Quinlan should have hit in that situation. I don't care about the righty on righty garbage. Quinlan would have come through in that situation.

OC last night
reminded me of Doug Decinces, circa 1986.
To Everyone asking about Q
Q is the 3rd string catcher, if something had happened to Budde. Figgy would have been catching.
Oh Yeah
No BoTG. It was one of the best games I have seen since Game 6 with all the tension involved.
Statement Game...
Even though we lost, we showed Seattle that we can hang with them even after spotting them FIVE runs and facing their ACE and their All-Star closer.

I like our chances for the division, and the showing against the Tigers tells me that we have a good chance to go far in the playoffs.

Now, let's not play down to the A's.  Go get them, Halos!

yaaaawwwwwnnnnnn.....
The game was good, but there is still such a long way to go.  It didn't matter which team won; the playoffs are up for grabs.  Watch out for Oakland!

Excellent point!
With HK and Side Salad on the horizon, I'd have to say that the Angels should be getting better. Howie or Nipples in the lineup and the we win Wednesday night.
