When it mattered most, when the pressure was on, when he needed a save and had a three run cushion, JJ Putz blew it. He gave up a run, then had two outs and the bases empty and he STILL blew the save.
In his two most important appearances of the season, the All-Star Game and tonight, JJ Putz choked.
They call it "Regressing to the Mean" in Statland.
They call it "Sucking" most other places.
Let's hope this is the real Putz we will see in the heat of the August pennant race.

Why isn't the entire Mariner team not regressing
to the mean?I mean, just observationally their team should not be this good. A good lineup and back end of the bullpen, yes, but a shaky defense, an incredibly flawed rotation.
For statheads: their run differential is pathetic, an almost one-to-one ratio between runs allowed and runs scored.
How can they continue to be this good?

I part ways with stat heads at the "crapshoot" lament. Mathematics just fails to measure grit, intestinal fortitude, willpower, leadership, courage, commitment, etc. Far, far too many playoff heroes became so because they defied their personal averages, or what should have been the statistical mean for their situation. My silver lining...
One of the best baseball games I have seen in a long time. Playoff intensity for sure.Also, Vlad is an incredible hitter. He is pressing more than I have ever seen one player right now, and his average is going up. It defies all logic. All we can hope for is that he stays healthy and has our hat on when he steps into the HOF.
