L.A. Seitz of Chicago reminds us that the cheating-obsessed Derek Zumsteg was once the man who broke the story of Pete Rose being re-admitted to baseball as he slices apart the Frankie-gate allegations in a spare and elegant prose.

I love the Sietz
Except for the fact that he loves the Hoodoo Gurus.cupie - April 5, 2007
In Derek's defense
He wrote the Pete Rose article, and he very bravely took the heat for it. But it was Will Carroll, IIRC, that had the sources. And while I haven't met Derek, I have met Will a number of times, and I get along with him pretty well. I think he's a pretty good guy. I don't mean to disparage either one of them.
The overarching point of that last paragraph is that it's usually a pretty good idea to measure your words unless you have pretty ironclad proof that the allegations are nothing less than 100% accurate.

Ridiculous
This non-story sure has a lot of legs.Look, people can speculate and opine to their hearts' content, but the fact of the matter is that umpires have examined dozens if not hundreds of baseballs thrown by Frankie over the years. His sliders routinely wind up in the dirt, and virtually every time the umpire will examine the ball to see if it's fit to remain in play. If he were applying foreign substances to the ball (and the undisputed evidence reveals that he has been following the same touch-the-cap routine since 2002), surely he would have been caught by now.
This is nothing more than wild, irresponsible and unfounded speculation by someone with waaaaay too much time on his hands.

not the resin
The problem on Frankie is he always pitches best when his hair is on fire. Meaning the bigger the game, the bigger and louder the situation the better he is. 4 run, non save situation he sucks. Tie game he sucks. Afternoon half the stands full of booty KC Royal fans he sucks. Primetime vs. the Yankees and Sox, he is the guy. With all the charts and spreadsheets that Scoscia uses, he should let Shields or Speiers go on non-save situations.thedon - April 5, 2007
