Game Thread - Blue Jays @ Angels - Burnett Vs. Saunders - 7:05 p.m.

The team imploded during Toronto's first visit earlier this season.
Having patched things up, we should now rise to the occasion during their 2nd visit.
Intentionally Altered Movie Dialogue:
The Rev: Kennedy's pushing thirty freaking years old, and if he don't wise up, he's gonna die an old maid.
Vladdy: I'm thirty myself!
Saunders had an extra day of rest.
Okay, his arm had the extra day of rest, I have no idea what the rest of his body was doing.

hell, ty cobb
was an outlandish racist and probably one of the worst human beings anyone could ever meet.but at least he didn't bet on baseball.
Caseys Kiss of Death - September 8, 2006
Cobb was a dick, but
Nothing he did ever caused anyone to worry or suspect that he was not committed to win every game. Betting on your own sport, perhaps even your own team, open the door to suspicions and possibilities. Bad. Bad. Bad.Stirrups - September 8, 2006
and how do we
know THAT for sure??? i would bet anything that he did gamble...just wasn't caught....and he was a racist and a drinker...probably put a sheet on and went out with the good ole' boys...angelsrallymom - September 8, 2006

ALL white people were pretty much racists it was the minority NOT to be the racist. eh?CaLiKrAzY - September 8, 2006
i don't think so
there were a lot of white people who were not racist......is it me?? or does this pitcher resemble gilligan?????
angelsrallymom - September 8, 2006
i think
the racism back then was pretty bad when black people can't even use the same restroom as a white person thats pretty hilarious bs.CaLiKrAzY - September 8, 2006
over generalizations are fun
aren't they? there were lots of racists, and there were many more who were not. go back to an 11th grade history class. blacks didn't achieve civil rights because the majority of white people were racists and against them, i'll just say that much.why am i even arguing this?
Caseys Kiss of Death - September 8, 2006
very true....
remember Nat King Cole???? he played in the best hotels, clubs, etc..but couldn't stay there as a guest...and dorothy dandridge swam in a pool in vegas, i think it was vegas, hotel and they had to EMPTY THE POOL AND REFILL IT!!!!!! can you imagine that happening to you????angelsrallymom - September 8, 2006
i understand that....
what i am saying is.....for all that he brought to baseball, for the fact that he broke ty cobb's (who was no angel, btw) record, for the way he played, they didn't call him charlie hustle for nothing..he was a good player...he is a hero with feet of clay...but i would rather my son look up to him than the steroid taking jerks or the ones who have complete meltdown tantrums......and gambling is a disease much like alcohol and drugs...but they are given chance, after chance, after chance...and to me they are worse than a gambler....i know he bet on baseball...the thing is he didn't throw a game to win a bet .... and that was while he was playing and as a player/manager....i was broken-hearted when he finally admitted he lied...but i guess i can forgive him because he was one of my favorite players..loved to watch him...angelsrallymom - September 8, 2006
it sounds to me like
you like rose more than your own angels.CaLiKrAzY - September 8, 2006
i like pete...always will
but geeeeze....i have been an angels fan for what 40 yrs?? 50...how long those boys been around lighting up that halo?????angelsrallymom - September 8, 2006
it goes without saying
that rose's numbers are hall of fame worthy, but i'd also like to take the controversial stand that his numbers weren't that great. he was a .303 career hitter...highly respectable, but nothing special. he had virtually no power, a career .784OPS, and had the most at-bats of any major leaguer...the next closest being something like 1,700 behind him (that's about 3 seasons worth of ball), and he was a terrible base stealer. oh, and how boring can you get? did he ever hit anything that wasn't a single? alot of his records and accomplishments are much more due to longevity than they are PROFOUND success. that said, his ability to play such a long and illustrious career are phenomenal, and he was a great player. nonetheless, what he did was absolutely unforgivable to the sport and for that, he should never be allowed in a hall as prestigious and time-honored as major league baseball's.Caseys Kiss of Death - September 8, 2006
strongly disagree.
the baseball hall of fame is a MUSEUM. they don't keep adolf hitler, joseph stalin, saddam hussein, etc. out of museums just because they are bad people, or break rules. the hall of fame is for the fans, and someday when i take my son to cooperstown to see the history of the greatest players of all time, i want the greatest players of all time to be represented, including rose, shoeless joe jackson, ty cobb, babe ruth, etc. it's a baseball museum, and they all deserve to be there.also, there is no proof that he ever bet on baseball as a player. there are different ways to go into the hall. as players, managers, umps, etc., and as far as we know, rose bet ONLY as a manager, and even then, he never bet against his team. put him in as a player, because there is no reason to do otherwise.
angels4adam - September 8, 2006
that is the worst analogy i have ever heard
how can you compare keeping hitler and stalin out of a museum to keeping pete rose out of a hall of fame? a museum is a historical center that documents historical events that occured and has absolutely ZERO to do with accomplishments or the honor and diginity of an individual. no agendas, no purposes other than to deliver history. there is no unwritten or written rule about how to get put in a museum, and no panel that votes people in.the baseball is a hall of FAME...a representation of the good of a sport, of people who honored the rules and codes of the sport, and performed to an exceptional peak in their careers. you are voted in based on the merits and what you did for the institution of baseball. there is criteria, there is an express purpose behind it, and it is selective...there is a reason people get left out or put in. i really don't know how to properly put into words how asinine that analogy is, so i hope someone else can.
Caseys Kiss of Death - September 8, 2006
Pete Rose Quote
"I'd walk through hell in a gasoline suit to play baseball."Let him in.
thewebb - September 8, 2006
i'd walk through hell in a gasoline suit
to get paid a billion dollars.gimme a billion dollars.
he's scum.
Caseys Kiss of Death - September 8, 2006
nope
no one can.its a museum. a record of baseball's history. call it what you want to call it, it exists to document the history of baseball, and it's best players.
hall of fame rule 5 states:
"Voting shall be based upon the player's record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played."
rule 5 talks about "integrity" and "character". in my opinon, baseball is being dishonest with itself by having the "integrity" and "character" requirements in there.
ty cobb, babe ruth, gaylord perry, john mcgraw...come on. we all know they aren't living up to the standards of the hall of fame.
leaving pete rose out of the hall of fame is just as dishonest as what he did to keep himself out of it.
angels4adam - September 8, 2006
have you read the full report on pete rose?
nope, you haven't. those that have claim he hasn't come clean. you just threw "in my opinion" into that, thus regarding it as that: opinion. he did something worthy of a ban from baseball. he bet on the sport, and was caught, and won't own up to all of his mistakes either. integrity is part of fame, and rose doesn't have it.Caseys Kiss of Death - September 8, 2006
rose
as an individual player is not in the hall. his accomplisments are, and his records are recognized, and can be found in the hall. there is documentation that it happened, and documentation that he holds the records...there's your museum aspect. it's not at all like leaving hitler or stalin out of a museum and just completely erasing the holocaust or something, so don't even get into that.however, as an individual, and a charater representative of baseball, his actions are worthy of keeping him from entering the hall of fame as an individual fit to sit among the other greats who never once compromised the integrity of the game.
Caseys Kiss of Death - September 8, 2006
if the definition of
the "integrity" is solely not betting on baseball, then you are right.but if the definition of integrity is other things, besides betting on baseball, then i believe i am right.
according to webster, integrity is defined as follows:
An unreduced or unbroken completeness or totality;
or
Moral soundness.
i think you would agree that there is far more to moral values than only gambling.
are you honestly telling me that there is no double-standard in the baseball hall-of-fame?
I absolutely believe that Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame. If you exclude Pete Rose you have to exclude many other people beginning with Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb, and others whose behavior would not stand the test of our current moral standards.
-Ken Burns, "Baseball" Producer
angels4adam - September 9, 2006
I think it was defined
incidents that jeopardized the integrity of the game by Kenesaw Mountain Landis when he booted the Black Sox from the game.
Conduct Detrimental to the Game might be another way to define Pete's ban. The guy was a manager of a professional baseball club. Who knows how he controlled the game to his advantage. If they didn't act in the way that they did, by baning him from baseball, everything would be like the WWF.
The rules are kind of vague so they can always be twisted, and bent to the changing times. You have to remember that most calls in the game are judgmental, up to the umpire making the call.
But once you are in I don't think they would take you out because of todays standards as Mr. Burns wants. You are judged by peers of your time, not of your grandchild's.
Cobb, Babe, and others might have had questionable life styles. But they didn't disgrace the game, and make a mockery of it. Or they didn't get caught. On top of the biggest kapu in baseball Pete lied, and lied again, and again. All his books are lies, and he still gambles. And we get to judge him.
The Hall is by Pro baseball. They decide who goes in , and why. Pete's records are in, yes. Pete's bust, never while he is alive is what I think. Baseball won't give him the joy.
eyespy - September 9, 2006
you can't use websters
to give a definition to a term that is being specified for a baseball context. he compromised the integrity of the game itself, or so the unpublished reports say. cobb just hated black people, and ruth was a womanizing alcoholic. but they never did anything to compromise the game itself. that's the integrity to which we refer.Caseys Kiss of Death - September 9, 2006
in my little humble opinion
it would be extremely hypocritical of "baseball" to ban Pete Rose when they aren't willing to do anything about any of the other scandals such as the steroid use. They bury their heads in the sand yet hold up Pete Rose as the poster child for the ultimate bad boy. Either they uphold all to moral and ethical conduct or they quit acting so sanctimonious about a select few.ladybug - September 9, 2006
Major League
has washed their hands of Pete. You don't see them using Rose as an example to the cause. And as for the enhancements farce. They blew it when they let "The Great White Dope" & "Shootin' Sammy" make a run at '61. If they let those two in the Hall then I can see Charlie deserving to be inducted.
The players also took other other things to make them play better during all times of the game. So if they start turning stones, they better turn them all. And how are they supposed to do that?
This is the country where everyone is innocent until proven guilty.
eyespy - September 9, 2006
exactly
and rose is innocent to the charge of "compromising the integrity of the game" as a player. therefore, he should be allowed in as a player.angels4adam - September 9, 2006
He bet on BASEBALL GAMES
where is that so called innocence. He lied than admitted he did.eyespy - September 9, 2006
he bet on baseball games
AS A MANAGER.he did nothing wrong AS A PLAYER, which is what we are arguing about.
angels4adam - September 9, 2006
He controlled the game at hand, nuff said.
Shit I really don't care if that dude with a freaky hair-doo gets in at all. I'm waiting for them to enshrine Bobby Grich. A much more deserving candidate on moral standards alone.eyespy - September 9, 2006
who cares?
i'm a "much more deserving candidate on moral standards." put me in there!no.
this isn't a "moral standards hall of fame."
its a shrine of baseball's best players. and he's no doubt one of them.
end of story.
angels4adam - September 9, 2006
pete knew it was a bannable offense
gambling on baseball gets you banned. that was in the rules when he did it, and he knew it. all the steroid and drug rules were not on the books when most of the alleged use occurred, so MLB can't retroactively take action.yeswecan - September 11, 2006

Sick, isn't it? : )Stirrups - September 8, 2006
What the.
How'd you get that done?!scottnak - September 8, 2006
How well do you know the area?
I gave you guys all the trick for getting out of the lot in a post a couple of weeks ago. And my house is within the triangle of the 22, the 55 and the 5. So...Quick trick out of the lot and onto Orangewood going east. Hop onto the 57 south, transition to the 22 east, get off at Grand/Glassell (2nd exit), and street driving for 3 minutes to the abode.
That post at xx:47:55 was from the seats in center field. The post at xx:11:09 was from the house. 23 minues and 14 seconds from chair to chair, including walking through the stadium and the parking lot to get to the truck.
Life is good.
Stirrups - September 8, 2006
that's about how I get to the stadium
91 to the 57 (all fastrak) to the 22 and then off at State College and then the couple of blocks to the stadium. OR off 57 at Katella and side streets all the wayladybug - September 8, 2006
Huh?
57 and Katella IS where the stadium is. What side streets all the way would anybody need to use?If you meant 55 and Katella, I got a hot family dining tip for ya'
Stirrups - September 8, 2006
yeah, I mean 55
I always get those freeways goofed up. 91 to 55 to 22 or 91 to 55 to Katella if the freeway is clogged.ladybug - September 9, 2006
Ah! Ok.
When you exit at Katella and head towards the stadium, the first intersection you come to is Tustin Ave. Turn left on Tustin and go south about a mile to Walnut. At the southwest corner of Tustin and Walnut you will see a Taco Bell. Turn right on Walnut and pull into the tiny strip mall behind Taco Bell. Next to the landramat there is a Mexican dive called "Tacos Jalisco". You can walk up to the order counter yourself, or seat your crew and get table service. Absolutely the best Mexican food in that part of OC. And you can feed 3 adults to the gills, plus a beer each, for less than 20 bucks.A typical family of four is less than 20 bucks. Sometimes only 15, including drinks. One chicken and rice burrito can feed two children. This is authentic food, with meats and produce trucked up from Baja. All the locals eat here, and it can be packed, but it is beyond worth it.I recommend the Torta Al Pastor
Stirrups - September 9, 2006
OK
I might be down that way next week....if I am I will call you and maybe we can meet up there for tacos and I will <gulp> hand over one of my valued possessions....the R&B series for you to copy!ladybug - September 9, 2006
