Angels Off-Day Off-Topic Thread

While the Angels are enjoying a relaxing day off in Sunny Southern California (as the Oakland Athletics cram onto a plane to fly all the way across the country to Tampa and deal with the unbearable mugginess of the humidity), here is the TOPIC OF THE DAY:

You are on a desert Island with 2 CDs and 2 DVDs - name your two favorite albums and your two favorite movies.

I will go first
Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasure

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
The Big Lebowski

The Dude Abides
If I could have ten movies, The Big Lebowski would certainly be one of them, but not in my top two. Then again, it has some cool music in it, too, so it's almost like getting another album.

Good call for Blood on the Tracks, although my Dylan selection would probably be Blonde on Blonde.

Two of those choices
are great. I've haven't heard "Unknown Pleasure" so can't connect there. The "Dude" is classic but don't think it would make my top 2.
On "Cuckoo's Nest"
Kesey's novel is one of my all-time favs and the film was for many years the unquestionalble #1. Strangely, it has lost a little lustre for me over the years. I will say however, that it has what is perhaps the best climactic scene in a move EVER (when Chief "busts out").

I met Milos Forman at "The Three Ostriches" restaurant in Prague in the Summer of 1990. It was great -- he laughed when I mentioned "Loves of a Blond."

i will go second
Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks
U2 - The Unforgettable Fire

Blazing Saddles
This Is Spinal Tap

I will go third
GBV-Human Amusements at Hourly Rates
JAMC-21 Singles

-

Shawshank Redemption
Blazing Saddles

I don't think I could pick a "Top 2"
all time favorite movies. But "Spinal Tap" would very likely be in my Top 5 and definitely in my Top 10.
Stuff I'd Take With Me
CDs
Nickelback - All the Right Reasons
Johnny Cash - American IV: The Man Comes Around

DVDs
American History X
Young Frankenstein

Sad scenario, but:
Albums:
Beatles - Abbey Road
Radiohead - OK Computer

DVDs:
Rudy
Swingers

ahhh...
Swingers is MONEY! Definitely top 5 for me. Probably top 3.
Alright
Albums: I'd be tempted to bring something really long, but I'd go with the first Stone Roses album, and then it's a toss up between OK Computer and EATB's Ocean Rain.

Movies: Strange Brew and probably Lebowski.

panther
Stone Roses' first coming is tits.
Second Coming
2nd coming is not tits
the first album is Panther

"kiss me where the sun don't shine
the past was yours, but the future's mine..."

Hmmmm...
CD's:
The Minutemen - Introducing The Minutemen
The Cure - Staring At The Sea
Lots of songs on both.

DVD's:
Patton
Super Troopers
These reward repeated viewings.

Interesting that no one's bringing porn.

We can bring that?
JK, not sure about the CD's

DVD's

  1. Shawshank Redemption
  2. History of the World Part I
If its on DVD you can bring it
super trooper's
is the fizz nizzy!

Beer Fest here i come

I saw Beer Fest
Better than Club Dread, not as good as Super Troopers.

It's still funny.

hmm...
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony - The Art Of War
Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP

Batman Begins
Half Baked

Must Choose Wisely
CD's
The Eagles - Hotel California
Beethoven: Symphony No. 9, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra

DVD's
Rat Race
Survivorman, Episode 36: Escape From a Desert Island

island picks
Bob Marley-Trenchtown Rock
The Ramones-Ramones Mania

The Search for Animal Chin
Blazing Saddles

Animal Chin...nice
Though if I were taking a skate video I'd take Blind's Video Days. Gonz, Jason Lee... and Guy Mariano is my hero
Video Days all time.......
Plan B's- Questionable video and The New Deal's-Useless Wooden Toys had the biggest impact on me aside from all the first bones brigade vids. But good call on Video Days.
those are good for sure
remember Hocus Pocus? awesome video. Second Hand Smoke as well.

I liked Speed Freaks (Santa Cruz) but mostly for the music (remember all those SST bands that would always be in skate videos?)

Me and my buddies
used to watch all those skate videos.

80's punk rock was neat-o.

Tits!

if it wasn't for those videos
I'd probably still be listening to Duran Duran

and I would have no idea who J. Mascis is either

I don't man
I like DD better than Masics.

We'll call it a wash.:0

ha, cool
I just realized I haven't gotten shit done at work today because of all this talk about music. I guess I like music more than baseball.
Streets of Fire!!!
As far as I know it's the only skate video where the star gets sentenced to 'hang by his neck until death!'

Skaters From Uranus from Life's a Beach is another classic.

Jason Jessee is the MAN
do you remember his mini ramp part in Speed Freaks? That was in my high school friend's backyard. Jessee is the shit.
oh
nice fIREHOSE reference by the way. makes me think of Natas.
Exactly.
Jessee's Neptune deck was my 1st skateboard. It's cracked down the center and the tail is only a memory but it still sits in the garage at my father's house right next to my first baseball glove. Man, I wish I was 14 again!
You'd shit if you saw my vid collection......
I have everything you've named, and yeah.....The Santa Cruz vids had the some of the best music. Fire Hose playing to Natas's part.....sick.
funny
I just read this comment after I posted the above. great minds think alike.
wow
thats really weird......How did you what I was going to say????? lol, right on man!
Sweeeet.
I still have a couple but between VCR meltdowns and about 400 viewings most have gone the way siderails and RipGrip: oblivian. I know Animal Chin was re-released in DVD with a bunch of extras; it'd be awesome if they put out some of the other stuff to. If it wasn't for us, extreme sports would still be a novelty and Warrant, Winger and Nelson would still be on the charts!
You can get most
anything you really want on dvd now....They remake every old skool vid now ever since the Dogtown Z-boys documentary came out. Theres been a real resurging interest in the "old skool" stuff in skateboarding and it brings back great memories for me. The music and skating from back then is the best.....

Check out any REAL skateshop and not some fucking corpo sportmart and you probably find whatever you're looking for. If not they'll order it for you. They're well worth it ....

This might be my best chance
at convincing my kid that I wasn't always a dork!
dude.....
you picked "introducing the Minutemen" and your kid thinks you're a dork? Show that kid what WTF'S up! ha....
The #1's were easy, the #2's were hard to choose
CD's
Kid A - Radiohead
Deloused in the Comatorium - The Mars Volta Did I just pick the Mars Volta?! DAMN YOU CEDRIC!

DVD's
Royal Tenenbaums
Old School

I wonder what senario we would find ourselves in where we wash ashore a deserted island with a TV, DVD player and a CD player...

And you have to build your generator
out of coconuts,bamboo and vines.
Where's the professor when you need him?
This driving me nuts!
I keep thinking of different CD's/DVD's to bring and I can't seem to decide!

I think Yoshimi from the Flaming Lips needs to be up there.

anything would be better than Kid A
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
Kid A just might be my favorite album, ever
kid A is good
it's certainly better than The Alarm's "Raw" album.
Kid LAME
Where did I read Lame is the new Rad?
oh yeah, on this site!
I bagged on Orioles ho's aka Orihoes
Cupie thought I was LAME. I said LAME as in RAD. Ladybug declared LAME is the new RAD and thus it is.
oh no no no
I didn't declare it, the author himself did. do a search on "lame" and you will find it. I just keep the torch lit.
how can I get on this island NOW?
a desert island all by myself? sounds like vacation

CDs:
The Cure-Join The Dots: B-Sides & Rarities
Russell Watson-Encore
double duty: for those relaxing times AND it gives me someone really cute to look at

DVDs:
Sex in the City COMPLETE set
torn between something like Shrek and Like Water for Chocolate.....I'll decide when the boat starts capsizing

Do you get to bring the CD insert too?
Or do you just look at the CD?
the inserts too
hell, the Cure one has a 70 something page book in it (BONUS-reading material too)
I might have to change my picks
to some crazy box set for the reading material!
Like Water for Chocolate?
Don't you know how to make fire with sticks?
no,
but I will try to make cream fritters

Don't you think Tita looked like a Mexican Marcia Brady??

Hadn't occured to me before now, but...
now that you mention it... here versus here
wait
thats cheating... 2+2=4 not 4,000.
the rules sez
what favorite album
Join the Dots qualifies
end of story
nice try
how many dvds is the complete set of sex and the city?
don't know
don't have it

why don't you go play bully on someone your own size?

he's right though
its two dvds, not box sets
Yeah, if the rule said box sets
I would take the advice that Rubixs has been giving me for too long and claim the complete sets of the first 7 seasons of The Simpsons.
lmao....if the rule says
forgot how ANAL this bunch is & that world peace is dependent upon a SINGLE DVD...then I'll go with The Meaning of Life and Like Water.

As far as box sets go, I have the Complete Rocky & Bullwinkle series on DVD!

Is it just R&B,
or are the short features also included?
it's everything
4 discs, 26 episodes which I believe is all of the shows
OMG!!! CULTURE ALERT!!!
You've got all the Fractured Fairy Tales!!! I need to hook you up with Rubix so that I can get my hands on these pronto! Everything important I ever needed to know.
haha
look what i done started.
hmmmm
a ride in the halomobile, a beer while you copy them all, yup, you gotta deal. Actually, I will see if the hubs has any more blank DVD's and I will copy them for you. BUT, fish tacos and beer sounds realllll good!!
question:
ALL YOU CAN TAKE is two cd's and two movies???....what good would they be???? didn't say anything about a cd player nor did he say anything about a tv/dvd...or is it implied that there is equipment floating around in a crate and just happens to washed up on your desert island?????? AND if that be the case, where would you plug it in???? the nearest coconut tree??? i would rather have a case of pina-coladas, a good book and a deck of cards....and maybe sean connery could drop by in a raft and........well most of you are too young to hear the rest...lol
Awww, mom. We solved this already.
Search the island until you find Gilligan. Follow Gilligan to the Professor. Kidnap the professor. The professor builds you everything you need out of coconuts and bamboo.

By the time 007 shows up, your side of the island should be pretty sweet.

well just got
home from work, forgot no game... :( and decided to throw in my 2 cents....but i guess if he could make a radio out of coconuts, palm leaves, shells and anything he found in lovey howell's trunk which for some reason she had along for a 3hr tour...oh yeah..they did have electricity from somebody pedaling the bicycle....i think i would rather look for macgiver
if you guys are so literal
why ain't you rich?
cuz
we pay taxes...ask me after tomorrow nite's mega lotto.....we at work plan on winning the 114 plus mil and retiring.....maybe i'll buy the angels from arte and drop the los angeles name...
ok...
so my picks would be:

movies: The Great Outdoors, and/or any james bond with sean or pearce, rocky & bullwinkle, dirty old men 1 & 2...

music: chicago, beegees, eagles, michael mcdonald, tony bennett, frank sinatra...oh hell...you can't pick just two....i'm leaving the island....

Last of the Mohicans
Shawshank Redemption

I will go Nineteenth....
Let's face it. This list would change by the hour, if not by the minute.

So, right this minute:

Physical Graffiti
Born To Run

Dazed and Confused
Pulp Fiction

dazed and confused
nice! the best thing ben affleck and matthew mcconoughy (sp) ever did.
The only good AFLAC movie
it's too tough to choose two, but for now...
RECORDS:

radiohead - kid a
isis - oceanic

MOVIES:

big lebowski
shawshank redemption

ok
Getz/Gilberto-The First one
Elliot Smith Either/Or

Dazed and Confused
African Qween

Bossa Nova
The first Getz/Gilberto is killer, but I'll take them all. To some Bossa Nova is nothing but cheesy elevator music but it's some of the best shit out there. Besides, whether anyone likes Bossa Nova or not, you get to hear it at every Angels game as whoever is running the sound system/organ plays nothing but Bossa Nova. Whoever he or she is they are huge Walter Wanderley fans.

Tchau.

CD
The Angels dumped their organist after 2004 - it is all on CD - the # of times the singer of the National Anthem / 7th Inning Stretch gets ahead or behind the recording= 50% of the time.
are you sure?
not all of those teenage girls can sing those songs in the same key (especially the nat'l anthem). if the anthem and stretch are indeed on CD, then they must have a different recording for each key.
do you guys
remember when hud's daughter sang the national anthem???? this was last year... she was very good....
that is a dream of mine
but because i'm not a teenage girl, there's not much chance i'll ever get to sing it. but here's the case i will present to angels management:
  1. I am a lifelong Angels fan, so I want to honor my favorite team
  2. I am a professional singer, so I want to honor my country
  3. I am a descendant of Francis Scott Key, so I want to honor my ancestor
  4. My version of the anthem is Panther
(ok maybe not #4)
is 1 - 3
all true????? then in that case, maybe we should all petition the stadium to let you sing.....
what day did you post your video, YWC?
I will post it on saturday
cupie plays keyboards and is looking her cutest
he posted one a week or so ago...
but post away!!
i didn't post any video
I did
and I will again.
I tried out for the 7th inning stretch
at Angel Fest a couple years ago. I got pretty good scores, but all the girls got higher than the guys.
Stuff your bra next time
No Organist, What Happened to Traditional Baseball
That's too bad, they had me fooled. But I still dig the cheesy bossa nova they play. Don't get me wrong, I'm not the total baseball purest but it's nice to hear an organist between innings now and again instead of being bombarded with loud music and the announcer pounding us with promotions and scoreboard gimmicks. I guess somebody has to help pay the bills?

At least we don't have a retractable roof on our house!! Now if we can only get the promotions department to do a tiki themed bar area along with other tiki/lounge/hawaiian themed goods and promos.

All About the Tiki
A tiki bar - that might be just what they need to do to get me to buy season tickets!

I firmly believe that the ONLY music that is played at baseball games should come from an organ. I can hear the pop music that they play by turning on the radio. I don't go to a baseball game to listen to music I could hear in my car.

But I CAN'T turn on the radio and hear live organ music played at a ballgame. It's uniquely a part of the ballpark experience.

Decorations by Shag!
Wasn't it...
Patty Duchanel, or something like that?

For reals? On a CD? That's sacreligious. Like putting ketchup on a hot dog!

jeff

Peggy Duquenel
See that? I keep tellin' ya...
Ketchup contains endorphins. Natural aphrodisiac. Also focuses the mind, and would help you spell "p e g g y".

The only thing keeping you from greatness appears to be ketchup on your hot dogs.

mein
CDs:
The Clash - Clash on Broadway (disc 2)
Johnny Cash - Live at San Quentin (IMO, better than Folsom)

Flicks:
Raiders of the Lost Ark (easiest decision I would ever have to make)
Castaway... just kidding...Back to the Future

Can we have two books as well? If so, I'll take:

Post Office by Bukowski
Of Human Bondage by Maugham

What?
Not Robinson Crusoe and Swiss Family Robinson? And if you want to toss out Castaway, I'd toss out Mysterious Island.
I was contemporizing to reach a larger audience
if we get to take any book
i'm definately taking, "The Art Of War" by Sun-tzu. Thats some epic shit right there.
That will come in handy...
...when you have to deal with The Uprising Of The Great Monkeys.
Stirrups had the right idea
CDS:
  1. How to build a raft out of palm trees and fronds and other advanced survival techniques. -Calcutta Jack
  2. Mystical Polynesian Levitation Mediatations: A guided Journey. - Calcutta Jack
DVDs:
  1. Build your own solar powered HAM radio out of coconut husks and sand: An idiotproof instructional learning course - Calcutta Jack
  2. Big Lebowski
then for the DVD
I'd have to go with Alton Brown's Down & Out in Paradise, the MacGuyver of the cooking world. I could create gourmet meals with a coconut, banana leaves and a bunch of seagrass
Alton Brown
My favorite Food Channel guy. That's a cool episode, too.

You & Stirrups have the right ideas...something useful rather than something entertaining. Everyone assumes that we're looking for entertainment answers. I'll starve while listening to my tunes, whereas you'll stay alive long enough to make it home to watch all the DVDs and listen to all the CDs that you want!

providing of course
that in addition to the CDs/DVDs we have the appropriate machines to play them and electricity to run them. Where's that rally treadmill? we can get that to run the generator that's made out of palm leaves and sand
fun game
Bob Marley- 4 disc set
DMB- anything

Wedding Crashers (you motor boatin son of a bitch)
Goodfellas

Good Question, Easy Answer
CDs:
Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand
Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street

DVDs:
24: Season 3
Pulp Fiction

Tough Decisions
CDs:

One problem I have is that most of my favorite albums are from the era of albums...you know, LPs, which are typically only 37-38 minutes long.

1. The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys - Traffic

For #2, it comes down to a hard choice between Blonde on Blonde (Dylan), Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out (Rolling Stones), and First Rays of the New Rising Sun (Jimi Hendrix), depending on my mood when I have to make the pick.

Right now, though, it goes to the Stones...literally the very first music I ever heard, as my parents played that album for me upon bringing me home from the hospital after my birth. A killer live set from Nov. 1969, at MSG. The dueling solos by Keith Richards and Mick Taylor on Sympathy for the Devil makes for probably the best guitar work they ever did.

The Movies:

1. The Narrow Margin (1952), starring Charles McGraw and Marie Windsor. How can you not pick a classic film noir with lines like this:

What about this dame, Mr. Crystal Ball?
- A dish.

What kind of a dish?

-Sixty-cent special: Cheap, flashy,
strictly poison under the gravy.

2. Cheech & Chong's Up In Smoke (1978).
Their first & best. Dazed & Confused is right up there for me (I went to high school with one of the actors in the film, so it's kinda cool seeing him play a high schooler), but the adventures of Pedro & Man are too much to resist.

I have to pick three for each
Albums:
The Beatles: Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band
The Velvet Underground: (the Banana Album)
  Radiohead: Hail to the Thief

Movies:
  Pulp Fiction
  Rushmore
  Almost Famous

This is not fair
CD's:

Cibo Matto-Stereo Type A

The Police-Reggatta de Blanc

But there are some good ones up there: Unforgettable Fire. The title track is one of my all time favorite vids. Double Live Gonzo if it was vinyl we could bring. I still remember how most of the scratches on Stranglehold happened.

DVD's:

Little Big Man

Surprised you didn't focus on
"Weakness In The Design"!

I am NOT letting go of the FFT's!!!

Oh, I see
Thanks for that explanation, yeswecan.

Well, I'm no fan of so-called Yacht Rock myself, but anyone who's actually listened to Pretzel Logic and thinks it's in the same class as Kenny Loggins' or Michael MacDonald's pabulum is not a terribly discerning listener.

don't blame me
i didn't make it up.

but perhaps this might also help explain:
http://channel101.com/shows/view.php?media_id=1337

that's the LUNNER GUY!!
Yes he is!
he got that gig because of his worldwide fame through the "Yacht Rock" series.
you can recognize that butt for a chin anywhere
I don't blame you
I appreciate your wising me up.

Okay, after watching that second link, I can see where Steely Dan's last few albums might make songs such as "Peg" yacht rock by association, but Pretzel Logic was three albums and four years before Aja, when they were still a real band and not a mere production entity. I challenge anyone here to listen to it, or any of their first four albums, and pronounce it insubstantial musically. It's far closer to Zappa than it is to Loggins.

Right Right Right!
Lovie and I adore our Steely Dan when we are floating about on Newport Harbor. It is splended music indeed! Nothing goes better with a dry martini than a little Steely Dan.

I'm quite certain Lovie would agree!

Good call
I forgot about Buster.
Buster Keaton
There's a man who knows his cinema !!
Since I'm Burning My Own CD's......
My 2 CD's will be Jammed with as many MP3 files as possible and they'll include....

Bob Marley: Good Riddims, Good Vibes, Good for da Soul!!

DVD's: More Live Concerts.

UB40 "Homegrown in Holland" Uplifing Reggae Riddims to keep the spirit H I G H !!!!!

2002 World Series Highlights. Since I'm stuck on this island I might as well relive the magic moments of the World Series I was so fortuneate to attend.

Hrm.
I love this desert island with it's "electricity for a DVD and CD player."

CD's:

Weezer - Pinkerton
Sufjan Stevens - Come On, Feel The Illinoise!

Two perfect albums. They can cover a broad range of island-based emotions. Annoyance, boredom, loneliness, happiness over finding some sort of coconut shaped like a celebrity head.

DVD's:

The Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
The Mr. Show Complete Collection

Humor and more humor. I need to laugh a lot when I'm by myself.
What about Angels in the Outfield

you deserve to be marooned just for that
JOKE, I was joking!
Tony Danza cuts in line...

God, how I hate disney

picks
With music, I like good songs, not a specific type. As for favorites, it depends on the month. And in honor of the Angels ride to breaking the As hearts, it's old school rap month.

Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill
Snoop - Doggy Style

Movies (these don't change)
