Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Game 84/162

Game Thread - Angels at Mariners - Colon vs. Moyer - 7:05 pm

Star-divide

So yeah, here is the deal, our weakest pitching link is the reigning Cy Young Award Winner.
Our pitcher's so fat, he digests your lineup.
Your pitcher's so old, he threw the Brylcreem ball before it was outlawed.

Intentionally Altered Movie Lyrics:
Bartolo: My name? Franz Kafka.
Police Officer: Hm. You think I am ignorant?

I hope we score Bartolo some runs before night falls.

He's like an overstuffed sausage
We're going to lose. At least thats what the numbers would suggest. Fuck numbers...

Angels 9 13

Colon ate 257 hot dogs after yeterdays game, dismantling Kobyashi's record of 53.

Someone please
Make a joke about Shigetoshi Hasegawa eating the relish in relief or something...

This is start #4 for Colon since coming off the DL.  I predicted it would take 5 starts before the Angels realized he's not healthy enough to get it done, though the fact that they haven't realized it yet makes me want to increase that number.

In any event, tonight's results will provide further evidence.  Colon will probably last about 6 innings, and will give up runs in four of those.

Angels: 3/7
Mariners: 8/15

The FO measures success differently for Colon
than it does for everyone else.  Any ERA below 6.00 is a good thing, considering his injury.

He needs to be shut down, but that won't happen.

Could not agree more...with one exception
Someone please explain to me why we rushed a power guy back form the DL without his power arm? Meanwhile, we had five guys making quality starts almost everynight.  Regardless, Colon will not complete his meltdown tonight - That will happen in his next start (you know, the one after  Weaver clears waivers and we are left scrambling looking for a fifth starter.)  Oh wow, Carrasco lovers unite!

Halos         8 / 9

Note to Stoneman/Sciocia:

Can you please get Soriano or Lee?!?

and pull Kendrick back up already

I'm not sure you can stick a fork in Colon yet
I1) the fork could sink deep into his body and you'll never retrieve it.

(2) He's got his control, it's just a question of getting his velocity back up.  I don't the Angels would be putting him out there every 5th day if they didn't think it was going to come back.

(3) Not having his plus fastball makes him extremely hittable because the batters don't have to worry about his best pitch, but the more his fastball's velocity comes up, he'll get closer and closer the Colon of 2005.

People have to remember, throwing high 90s, you've got to be strong, and his being out has taken that away, but not necassarily forever.  The next month is crucial.  He doesn't have to get back to 2005 Colon immediately, but if the number on the radar gun starts ticking back up, he's on his way and may be back to his old self in the late summer and the playoffs, and it's always handy to have a CY Young type pitcher around that time of year.

The key phrase
I don't the Angels would be putting him out there every 5th day if they didn't think it was going to come back.

I have little doubt that this is what the Angels' braintrust thinks.  However, when 100% of the evidence is to the contrary (indeed, his velocity appears to be decreasing with each outing), it's time to question your thoughts or thought process.

In his first start back, I was somewhat impressed because Colon was hitting 93 and 94 on the gun, not that far off from his usual.  But by his last outing, according to the radio guys, he was only in the mid-80s, never getting above 90.  Good high school players can hit an 85 m.p.h. fastball.  So unless Bart becomes his opponent (i.e., some reasonable facsimile of Jamie Moyer), he's in deep doo-doo.

Our pitcher's so fat...
... someone mistook him for me.

Tigers 10

Can Rooney
Step on Moyer's balls?
They are slow enough
I just read a funny today
The one Englishman to score on his PK was actaully born in Canada.  How come you guys don't practice PK's?
From The LA Times
Then the referee showed Rooney a melodramatic red card. Then Rooney, 20, grimaced like a petulant teenager and departed the field to go kick a water bottle. Then England had to play with only 10 men, which meant England probably could win only with penalty kicks, which meant England probably couldn't win, owing to some sort of eerie chemical in English obstetrics units that prevents English children from growing up to take successful penalty kicks.

(Only one of four England players made one Saturday, and he was born in Canada.)

I have to say
I'm not sure if the writer was watching the game.

Does the LA Times have a cricket reporter?

Crickett reporter?!?!?!?!?
they barely have news reporters....
"You guys"?
I'm not sure they'd want me trying.

I might just as well ask whether Team USA practised with 9 men....

C'mon
We don't have a star above our crest and lose on PK's in elimination games.
I've alluded to this before...
but most football fans in this country don't care that much about the national team.

It's rather like asking you what you think about the US performance in the World Baseball Classic. Not much either way, I'd guess.

So no big whoop
Just all hype?

I love the Angels more than WBC USA team, correct?

Replace with Arsenal/England
you're an arsenal fan?
thats too bad
You are all Arsenals!
Hah!  See what I did there?
Rooney - not the band
How come he is not getting as much grief as "The Beautiful Beckham" for his red card?
I'm watching Texas
hit home runs for fun off Toronto, in front of about seventeen paying spectators.
Can we finally get a sweep?!
Let's hope so:

Halos: 5/11
M's: 4/10

Let's get Bartolo his first win of the year along with that first sweep of the year!

predictions
halos - 8, 8
m's - 3, 8
WTE was traded!
They actually got something for him, per the Phyzzard.
What was that trade?
Evans who?
Terry Evans
Minor league outfielder - started the year in A and was promoted to AA a month ago.

http://tinyurl.com/p5akd

Terry Evans
An outfielder, 24 years old...started the year at Palm Beach (A) and went .311/.373/.550.  Spent the last month at Springfield (AA), where he posted a .307/.369/.640 mark.

15 HR at Palm Beach (60 games), 7 (in 21 games) at Springfield.  But this is the number that the Angels liked the best: at AA, he walked only 3 times against 21 Ks (20/50 at single A).

He's also 26/28 stealing bases this year, combined.

He was kind of old to start the season in HiA.
Then again it is better than nothing.
We already have a Terry Evans in the system
I know he is injured but the numbers sound similar to Nick Gorneault. Terry Evans will be 25 when he is invited to spring training next year.  I guess the cash is also a consideration but anything less than 1.5M would not make sense to me.

jjackflash, sort this one out for me.

Jeff Weaver Traded To Cardinals
Breaking word is that Jeff Weaver has been dealt to the Cardinals for minor league outfielder Terry Evans plus cash considerations.
Evans is a 24 year-old outfielder currently hitting .307/.369/.640 in 75 ABs for the Cards' Double A affiliate. He struggled in High Class A last year, but mastered the level in two months this season.  He's been described as the "out of nowhere prospect who mashed his way out of A ball" by Viva El Birdos.
Down on the Farm
Meanwhile, for those who like to keep tabs on the Angels' prospects, Jose Arredondo had his first start for AA Arkansas today.  I think he did OK: 9IP, 5H, 0R, 2BB, and 8Ks.  He got the win, albeit barely, as the Travs managed but one unearned run.

He had a no-hitter going through 4 2/3.

nice DP
it's nice to see some good DEFENSE.
Why still leadoff
Figgins is killin me this season
Colon
How does he look on the mound?  All I've got is Gameday...
i still
don't think he looks that great at all, but he's getting outs so far, but really, i don't expect him to keep putting up 0's
OK, I guess
His fastball is still only 89-92.  In the past, he has gotten stronger as the game wears on, but he'd usually start 92-94, and reach 96 or 97 in later innings.  But if this means that he'll reach 95 later in the game, then I suppose that's OK.

But 89 is a lot different than 95.

His control seems good.

Not skinny and not as good as Moyer
I have a feeling the M's will catch him soon.  The big guy continues to get too much of the plate.  Phys is annoying with his 2 Strike rant but he is right.  No power and no command is a recipe for disaster.  The Halos need to get the bats going again tonight.
Best since back
Looking good - getting ahead of all batters - just had a great inning in 3rd
2 on, 0 out
let's get the rally started
good enough of a start for you????
quinlan!!!
3-run HR
i thought it would be jinxed
because phys had just said "he can hit a 3-run homer"
QQQQQQQQQQ
is it shocking for everyone else when he gets a hit?..especially a homer?
yes
he's still on my shit list
other than Napster
seems like everyone is on your shit list!
why is hathaway93
still on your shit list?
WhooHooo for Q!
WhooHooo for Q!
Q!
yesterday the Seattle tv feed showed a view from behind the plate toward right field...and Morales raked one out to right.

They just showed a similar view toward left center, and Quinlan hits it out. I think the Seattle director is secretly an Angels fan.

HE'S JUST LIGHTING THE WAY!!!
Cabfare!
Hows that for continuing the streak?
OCAB
Woo hoo!
OC OC OC OC
yeeeeeee hawwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
DOES OC LOOK
LIKE HE IS SHRINKING OUT OF HIS UNIFORM??  LOL
nice inning
alright oc!
NICE
cabby = panther
Oh, man
IbaƱez has to be pissed about the ball bouncing off his glove AFTER it gets over the fence.
Hey, Cabbie!
How much to take Moyer downtown?
OC is the man!
Moyer rarely gets rocked like this
He looks easy to hit, but he's not.... I can't wait to get to Oakland
Well
I guess this settles whether or not OCab's on-base streak will continue.
the poetry of phys
"the wizard of OC...Can you say 'sixty-two straight games'?...yes."
Give Sciosia credit
Not bunting Quinlan to take off the DP.... He was going for a big inning and telling quinlan he had confidence in him... Quinlan paid him back for that vote of confidence in spades.
OH, OH...COLON IS
MOVING THE ARM LIKE IT IS STIFFENING!!!!!   HAS JEFF LEFT TOWN YET?!?!?   THINK THE CARDINALS WOULD NOTICE A SLIGHT SWITCH????
I don't think
we could pass of big fat Latin guy for a tall skinny blond white guy... not that we'd want to... Bartolo has a shutout going, and he hit 95 on the radar once today.
Weaver Traded
To Cardinals, for Terry Evans.  Double A outfielder.
Link
from AP.  He's already hit over 20 homers between single and double A.  Florida State league is a pitchers league.
My bad
You guys beat me to it.
Fellas
Weaver has been traded.
REALLY?? WOW...that's news to me
thanks for sharing it!  more details......

NOT!

OC
Long way to go, but when you're getting mentioned in the same sentence with Ted Williams, you're doing something right.
Much as I love OC and Q's dinger
Panther of the Game has to go to Colon for this incredible pitching effort, easily his best of the year.  It's like Good Colon has been on a vacation since September, 2005 and only just now came back.
Agreed
Bartolo is looking good, he's having to pitch more than throw, but this is the first game I've seen his fastball have a bit more giddy-up to it.  That's a good sign that his best pitch is slowly coming back.
It's a pretty small sample size
But Napoli hasn't looked good at the plate his last two games... but I'm impatient... I want promising rookies to hit a homer every game.
Sounds like my dad
He trades guys after their first at bat.
A generous strike zone
is currently leading the GAME PANTHER consideraton...
Interesting
since I just joined the proceedings.  But I'll certainly believe you -- the chances of Colon suddently turning good with his velocity down (I haven't seen him throw faster than 91 so far) are pretty slim.
Moyer
got a shitload of calls too.
There are plenty
of guys who can pitch successfully, rarely topping 92, but they must have very good movement and excellent control.  The large intestine's control has been particularly good today, as he's mostly been on the corners, and his ball has shown some movement.  91 with movement is better than 93 without.
We own ichiro
I'm hungry
"I'm hungry"
followed by that sig... well... draw your own conclusions...
I'm in college..
always hungry, never anything to eat.
Could we be seeing
a CG out of Bart? 62 pitches in the 6th...??
Perhaps
without overpowering stuff, he is working on the control and maybe just maybe (just hopefully) will be a dominant pitcher without the high-spedd gas...
In other words
Bart morphs into a better version of Moyer.

Hands Down
Lookout Landing is the funniest blogs, win or lose.  Especially lose.
yeah they are
ever since you pointed them out, I have been snooping. They are at comment 200+ to our 100....chatty, hilarious bunch!
The Mariners are no joke
Ichiro. Lopez,Kohjima and Ibanez, and Beltre and Sexson were heating up.... Just because it doesn't look like elecctric stuff, when you go 6 inning with so few pitches, you're not just lucky.
All right!
Go Figgy!
Fuck You Phys
mentioning the great DiScarcina and Hud in the same breath.
GREAT ?
Are we going to have this debate again?

Because if we do and it escalates, remember, that I will do the time...

agree
diSar had a career line of .258/.292/.341 he was a decent SS, but not GREAT in any way
maybe remind cupie
that you are a hot chick before posting such blasphemy...
DiSar
Wasn't great just TITS!

and don't you forget it.

what debate?
Disar sucked. Especially when he got injured in '95. I cried after that one game playoff.
Pitch Count
after 7 innings:

Moyer 108 pitches

Colon 68 pitches

Nice.

Indeed...
about 10 pitches an inning. Can't get much better than that! Can hope for a CG... but I doubt Sosh will let him out til the end.
Sosh
will keep him in until hes either over 100 pitches or he is sucking
Moyer
100 pitches for him are like 20 pitches for nomral guys who throw harder than 40 mph.
be nice to see him get a little more K's
could
Carl be arguing with the umpire about dinosaurs...
what is going on
what is this all about.  get him off the field!
Everett
been a hot head his entire career....
Last call must early tonight
how is he not thrown out?
what is everett's prob????
What I don't get is
Everett seem pissed at the first base ump... What did he do?
Sure is a shame
When a sweet-tempered guy like Carl Everett is provoked into losing his temper.  I'm sure he's in the clubhouse right now, on the phone to his anger-management sponsor, Jose Guillen.
We need to keep in mind
this is just a 4 run lead... I hope the bp isn't packing for Oakland just yet
LMAO
Actually, he called ozzie guillen and the oz is talking him down...lol
when did
macier move to 3rd?
Just now
When they took Q out and put AK in.
Micer
We can just do a full-tume Bonds shift, let Maicer cover his side
81 pitches thrown
in 8 innings, 61 for strikes.
What would be great
would be the create a team of the biggest jerks in the game... Pierzynski, Everette, Milton Bradley, Jeff Kent, etc.... Then let Lou Pinella coach it... or that coach in A ball that wigged out
LOL
and Eddings for home ump?
Call 'em
The California Chemistry
and bobby wright
i know he's basketball but what the heck...he would be perfect .....
i think u might mean
bobby knight
AHHHHHHHH-----CHOOOOOO!!!
who has the bandaids?!?!?
Gesundheit
Heh.
gawdamit
get a kleenex for yourself and a paper towel or two for the rest of us...
lmao
got my handy dandy super mop 'as seen on tv'
9 innings?
hope he pulls it off
he's not exactly ripping 'em down
but a solid, stable performance.
I don't care how hard he's throwing
You go 8+ (so far) giving up 0 runs and 4 hits, that's a fantastic outing.
agreed....that's what I was saying
I am really really really sick
of Phyzz's continual "pulls it down". He's not picking apples--ever hear of gravity??? Get a new script, guy
there are just so
many cliches that one can USE when broadcasting!!!  if you went to broadcasting school you would KNOW that!!!!!   i'm going to send you to ump school!!!!..
GET THE BROOM!!!!!!!!!!!
 we'll hoover them....
Missing broom
Anyone seen my broom? I misplaced it at the end of the year last year.  As soon as I find it, I plan on using it a lot again.

Thanks Bart, your fantasy status needed that!

WAHOOOOOOOOOOO
Panther**COLON!!**  Nice job-actually amazing ...under 100 pitches.
Three.
CG shutout for Bart in less than 100 pitches.  Fantastic game for the Panther of the Game; the Halos are now 4 games out of first.
Back from San Diego
just in time to watch the last of the 9th.

Beautiful.

you missed a game toots
Colon did superb. Q started it with a 3 run homer. NICE game!!
I listened on the radio in the car :)
I kept running out to my car to check the score on the radio during rehearsal breaks.

I think the director thinks I have a drug problem.... haha.

LOL
I can picture that
Your drug
Panther-caine

and the streets are overflowing with it tonight!

Hahaha...
I'll take a note to my director tomorrow from Dr. Rev that gives me permission to leave early to watch the game :)
PANTHER!!!!!!!!
The Large Intestine
I didn't think he had this in him.

I believe this is his first shutout with the Halos.

Panther!

No shit?
Confirmed by Jose Mota
First shutout as an Angel.  In fact, his first since 2002, when he was with Montreal.
and what else happened in 2002 ???
shhhhhhhhhh
don't let Murphy hear you!
first sweep of the season
i think.
That's the sexiest thing I've heard
all season!
Success!
First sweep o the season right?
What nice timing for the greatness...
Time to nuke the misplaced leaders of the ALW.
sweet victory
our first sweep of the season.  if we sweep oakland and detroit sweeps seattle...that puts us right around first place, depending on how texas does... sweet.
has anyone seen seahawk24 lately??
we MUST thank him for jinxing the hell outta his team!!  We fixated on a sweep!!  SUCKAH!!
HA!
they just showed a pic of jeff weaver in his new cardinals hat and he cut the mop!
Almost as nice as the sweep
The Angels went an entire series without making an error.

Four games is still a lot to make up, and they can't afford to go 1-3 or get swept in Oakland.  But it's starting to look like they're a third baseman and a reliever away from being a pretty decent team again.

Congrats Fellas
Lets keep the Panther rollin'.
hey guys
i just heard that jeff weaver was traded today. does anybody have any details?
you are pure evil ;-D
