Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Game 30/162

Game Thread - Angels at Blue Jays at 4:07 pm (Pacific) on FSN
Ervin "Black Magic" Santana Vs. Gustavo "Sister Gustave" Chacin

Star-divide

The only two starting pitchers on my fantasy team that are not injured are these two !!!! Out of purely selfish reasons, I hope that the Angels score a lot of unearned runs while shutting out the Pajarros Azulos.

FOX's Ken Rosenthal on Team Feathered Cobalt:
One problem for the Blue Jays is that they're not getting enough innings out of their starters with A.J. Burnett on the disabled list, Roy Halladay rebounding from a sore forearm and Josh Towers averaging only 4 1/3 innings per start. The team's bullpen woes are a predictable consequence; the Royals are the only team in the majors getting fewer innings per start out of their rotation . . .

Scouting Report
Some Angel Batters Against Sister Gustave
Vlad 3/5 1.667 ops
Kennedy 2/3 1.333 ops

Sister Gustave has a 4-1 record despite a 4.70 era. I guess that means that Blue Canada has been scoring a lot of runs in support of their Sister's efforts...

Come over to the window my little darling
I'd like to try to read your palm
I used to think that I was some kind of gypsy boy
Before I let you take me home

Mine
Angels 6 runs, 11 hits
Blue Jays 5 runs, 10 hits

Scott Schoeneweis gives up at least one run.

my picks...and a question...
what the hell, I'll give this a try:
Angels 7 runs 13 hits
Blue Jays 4 runs 9 hits

Hopefully, they'll still be riding high on their win. With Carrasco, Lackey & Weaver up to pitch the next games, they need to pull it together.

I do have a question/comment: With Molina catching for Toronto, do you think that is a huge disadvantage since he knows the batting styles of the Angels so well?????

predictions
halos - 8, 12
blue gays - 5, 11
Chacin is Trouble
He's a soft-tossing junkballer, precisely the type of pitcher that gives the Angels fits (3 ER in 14 IP last year).  Also, Rex Hudler simply cannot pronounce his name correctly (it usually comes out as "sah-SHEEN" rather than "SHA-seen"), so prepare to be constantly annoyed if you're watching on the tube.

Ervin will be on his game tonight.  In fact, it's my belief that Santana pitches better when the Angels have trouble scoring for him than when he's got a comfortable run cushion.

Angels: 3/7
True Gays: 2/5

Note: I don't want to come off sounding homophobic.  Angels4Adam's "blue gays" reminded me that back when I was a kid, I used to have some fun altering baseball cards (common players, only!), whether it was to mess with their hair, erase out the eyes, or simply add an evil mustache.  Once, I changed "Blue Jays" across a long-forgotten player's jersey to "True Gays."  At age 12, I thought I was incredibly clever.

That Card
might sell for thousands in a Westside art gallery if you had a Cal Arts degree and nice framing...
I think
I still have it.  My parents never threw out any of my old baseball cards, perhaps because my mom, a Yankees fan, was heartbroken when her parents threw out her baseball cards when they moved to California in the 1950s.  She had DiMaggio, Mantle, etc. in her collection; she could have retired years earlier if they'd been kept.

I've got some shoeboxes (Vans boxes, to be precise, from when Vans were originally cool and were made in the USA) with all of my old baseball cards.  Maybe I could put together a collection of my "original work."  If I didn't shower for a week, maybe I could even convince someone that I'm a starving artist genius-type!

Right track
just add the $65,000 MFA from Cal Arts
that's funny
and some cards don't even need altering. for example I have a 1983 Rusty Kuntz card...
leonard
we will certainly laugh and cry and cry and laugh about this angels team all summer long.

sisters of mercy: 6/10
new skin for the old ceremony: 2/8

Nice
Didn't know you had a Len-Cohen affinity. I take back all of my Beach Boys remarks!
i'm no one-trick pony
nick drake is another one of my folkie faves. more recently in that genre, Sun Kil Moon (ex-Red House Painters).
ZZZOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMM
those references flew way over my head.
not even Nick Drake???
the guy's 1972 song was in a VW commercial, for crying out loud. i know what to get you for Libra Las Vegas, Part II.
Lets not get crazy
yesterday was exciting but I am looking for another low scoring match up.

Halos 4/9
BJ's 3/5

Howie at first? Napoli or Jose? Alfonso?!? Many questions left to be answered.

interesting
figgins, lf
cabrera, ss
anderson, dh
guerrero, rf
kendrick, 1b
alfonzo, 3b
molina, c
murphy, cf
kennedy, 2b

HK-47 bats 5th, Frosty Fonzie bats 6th, kennedy back to 9th.

WTF?
someone punch Sosh.
G.A.
Must've crabbed the loudest to egt the first turf-day offday.
WOW
This lineup is 'Fun-kaay'. Although, the 6-8 hitters are still mediocre, as usual.

I'd flip Kennedy with Kendrick. AK batting 5 with Kenny Howdrick in the 9 slot.

AK
likes batting 9th or something, but at some point Sosh needs to put the team ahead of what AK likes and bat him where he can actually use the fact that he's hitting singles and doubles to use
i have to backpedal...
I would make the observation that this lineup that sosh has minimizes 1-2-3 innings the most, given the roster. So I don't think it's necessarily just Sosh's indulgence of AK wishes to put him in 9 tonite (given all the newbies).
Fonz
Noooooooooooooooooooooo!

And I just put Napoli in my fantasy team too hoping he'd play today (he was dirt cheap though)

AK batting 9th because it's an LHP
He's not as hot agains the LHP ...

... I usually gloss over the Random Lyrics, but the comments point out to me that it's Leonard Cohen.  Well done!  And on topic, too.

Bloody hate
MLB.tv when it edits out the ad breaks, they're half the fun! (especially the way we've been playing lately!)
you're only missing out...
on mountains of pop-culture cheese... but I guess that's probably more likely to subversively entertain... hmm
For sure
Most of the ads are crap, but it's better than a blue screen trying to get me to start and MLBlog right???
AN
Mlblog, not and
lol
definitely better than a blue screen... unless you're on LSD.
mlb.tv feed
damn thing is a widescreen feed squished into fullscreen, so hard to watch
I've got mine
on double the size it comes up with, find the resolution is a bit too poor for full screen, it gets a bit blocky - in this mode the widescreen fits fine
Uniform query
Are the Angels the only team who's road uniform doesn't have their city/state name across the front?
No
occaisionally you'll notice it with the Astros and a handful of silly costumed teams like the Friars. and is it cool or lame? i say that it is quite invalid.
Don't those teams
have shirts that have Houston or San Diego on them though, even if they have versions that don't? None of the Angels shirts have Anaheim or Los Angeles on. I just noticed how when they showed Glaus homering in the 02 WS the grey road jersey had ANAHEIM on it, whereas tonight it has ANGELS like the home one
yep.
the angels are the only team in mlb... and maybe all of pro american sports... that use the team nickname exclusively on all uniforms with no locality mentioned.
actually...
now that i think of it it's common in american football.
Not true
Orioles
WOW
those poor fans. I never really addressed this issue with my baltimore fan friend... we must commiserate and bond as brothers in the family of fans victimized by the marketing department.
i think so
it's part of the angels' strategy to market "angels baseball" instead of "[name of city] angels". the radio network is also called the "angels radio network", whereas most (all?) teams have their city names in there. also, commentators don't substitute "Los Angeles" or "Anaheim" for "Angels" when they're speaking of the team.
Just had a quick look
and from what I can see the Cardinals, Brewers and Orioles also don't display their town on the road jersey, so I guess I answered my own question!
Bugger
Not a good start by Magic here
WELL CRAP.....
and Glaus up with 2 on and no outs
Anyone else watching on mlb.tv?
Do you also not have a balls/strikes and runner position display? Pretty annoying not having it!
just pretend
that you're living in the late '70s
I wasn't even alive then!
<<GROAN>> you are making me feel old
I was
in preschool
MLB.tv does that a lot
especially when they aren't showing commercials ... it's like they're just using the video/audio feed of a station but not the graphics or anything else.
It's weird though
cos you still get the captions showing batters averages and stuff, just not the game info bar at the top which, lets face it, is more important!
watching it on TV....sorry
maybe do gameday?? they seem to keep up pretty well
anyone else
see the resemblance with HK47 and GA???
Howie already has 2 HBP
but Garret is almost never hit.

But otherwise, I see what you mean ...

kinda meant physically
same blah look on their faces
Escalade and Cimarron
He's one eight the size.

And yes I thought the same thing also.

HK
Just wore one for the team, good lad! Now up to the Fonz (yeh right!) or AK to drive him home
loved how he did it...
no reaction whatsoever, as he matures, he's simply going to be the man.  Can't decide whether to pick him up or not.  Think he'll start ever game, even against righties?
Yeh
he didn't even flinch! Might've been a different story if it had been the Big Unit who clipped him with a 97mph heater though
did I mention....
I hate when GA bats 3rd vs lefties instead of Vlad?  Is Sosh in a coma?  Does this bug anyone else?
I don't really understand
what they deal is with that, either.

But recent studies hint that your best hitters should bat 1st, 2nd, and 4th ... so putting Vlad in the clean-up spot doesn't really bother me.  The difference is very small.

Problem is
that they don't follow the logic of these new studies, they just get lucky and occasionally dial in something close to correct.
cant jose
make some contact
C'mon
Papa Smurph
D'oh
Just as I type that he pops up
pathetic....
6-7-8 could be very painful tonight.
Nice slider
to get Bengie there, almost Frankie-esque movement
My mom gave me a bunch of old Scioscia cards
mostly Dodger days some Angels.....they worth anything???
Check E-bay
ebay will give you the best idea of the lowest common denominator in the prices... but they'd mostly be worth money to people like us or people like hooligans in the outfield pavillion with brooklyn blue flannel shirts buttoned only at the top.
Short Answer
No.
could you clarify your answer, REV??
not sure I understood everything!!!
Scosh
If he keeps this up, you ae going to have to pay someone to take the cards
I'm not going to lie...
Letting him go was the right move instead of paying him over 7 million, especially with how his defensive skills have declined, but it is still tough to see Bengie on another team.  One of my favorite Angels of all time.
Yeah ...
if we didn't get rid of bengie the cumulative weight of our catchers and pitchers would reach record heights... a distinction so dubious it would likely have been in Guiness' book.
As iI told my son
Bart and Bengie were not allowed to ride on the same plane, or on the same side of the ship.
Dear Mr. Wells -
Please become an Angel next year.

Sincerely,
thewebb

Lose Fonzie
He's not hitting and now his poor defense is rearing it's ugly head.

S

tough play though...
bouncing off the bag like that.  Let's not release him, just stop starting him for gawd sakes.
No way
that D-Mac makes that play though
yeah but....
he fielded it well and just forgot how to get the ball out of his glove.

S

3 runs in 4 innings...
wouldn't be so bad if we had an offense.
wow...Hud being honest
Impressed.
Murphy....A FREAKING STUD
Look at that cannon

S

f ya Murphy!
Anyone here other than me and the crickets?
Cut down
Thats the way to end an inning laddie
...and guess what
Molina was in so our catcher caught it!
Attakid
Smiles Murphy's throw sounded great!
wow
great throw..erstad doesnt make that play
nope...
definitely better arm
Who?
Murphy
No, no, no
I meen Who doesn't make that play? Wally Pipp?
good rip/hustle!
Murph throw
Just got home from work in time to see Murphy's gun. Great throw, but it also looked to me like the runner got a terrible jump.

...and now a double! WTG kid!

yeah...
runner was losing his balance on his way home, still a great throw.
murphy!
is a stud
Anyone else see
the Jays RF behind Wells on the play just fall over for no reason!
They got...
Snipers in Toronto. Its a known fact.
Don't mean to be a killjoy, but....
on Murphy's throw home he was in VERY shallow centerfield when he caught it. It was accurate, but it was not a difficult throw to make...
O'Murphy
Damn he's got wheels, too bad he missed that ball.

S

no doubt
faster than hell
oh man
I thought Murphy was going to come down with that one.
on the other hand....
Ersty might make that play, or at least not let it go to the wall.
No way...
Ersty would've cut it off but it still would've scored the runs.

S

a guy would score from first...
in a play he cuts off?
id guess
either erstad plays it into a double instead of a triple..or gets hurt making some crazy sliding catch
OUCH!! NOT NICE
If were were offer M Cabrera for Kendrick and Wood
who here would do it?

I think I would.

that should say offerED
Maybe Mathis and Wood
but I don't know about Kendrick and Wood. Of course, they probably wouldn't take just Mathis and Wood.
come on ANGELS
6 runs....NO PRESSURE here....6 runs
Well
At least we are not losing because of Glaus and Molina...
nah, we're just beaning Bengie at the plate
banYAN
hasnt been bad lately
Gut the team
Let's just do the inevitable and get rid of some of the dead weight so the young guys can get in.

And trade Wood for a nice 3rd string catcher (preferably to the Rangers).

HK as well
Let's get some picks for him too (from the Rangers maybe)?
yeah...
you can't trade picks, you mouth-breather
I LOVE HOW
WHENEVER SOMEONE HERE DOESN'T KNOW THE MINUTIA OF BASEBALL RULES, THEY ARE A MORON (via the judgemental stat fucks), BUT WHEN A.N. HAS THE GEEKIEST YAHOOS FROM NAPA PIPING IN ABOUT THE ASSES OF THE PLAYERS IT IS JUST A GOOD OLD FASHIONED COMMUNITY..

In other words, lighten the fuck up SaberJoe

yeah, my response had nothing to do with...
trading picks, I just didn't get the point of the post.  But George, I did vote for you!  Probably the only guy on this site!
figgins!!
WITH A BUNT!!! how does that happen
Must be
behind by 6 runs and picking up the drills they ditched at Spring Training...
Secret Agent Bengie
Letting a run score for his true employers.
WOOOHOOOO FIGGIE
DINO
That guy is an idiot....Figgy ran through his stop sign...that's Halo baseball, Dino doesn't know how to play Angel baseball!

S

hate to say it...
but I'd say Dino tried to do the right thing there.  Getting thrown out at home to make the 1st out when down 6-0 would be stupid.
as opposed to
stranding a runner at 3rd, which our alleged best player Adam Kennedy did last inning?
with zero outs?
And Vlad on deck?

I think we need a happy medium.  There's a difference between agressive base running and idiotic base running.  Roenicke loved to run our guys into outs.  Great part about that is a bunch of our guys increase their chance of injury as well.

it's a hard call
but Figgie was already moving & that boy is fast.  It's a gamble either way...not exactly like the offense is a sure guarantee to be able to bring him in
Way to...
stay with it and get those thoughts out there ;-)

S

The Angels do best
with their surprise attacks. Damn, its hard to type with a 9 mos old competing for the keyboard
if bengie comes up
with the ball..hes out..that was the right call by dino
I disagree...
and here's why:
He did this before, early in the season to Izturis when he would've clearly scored.  Figgy knows that and so he ran through the sign.  You're already down 6, no reason not to run, you have got to get something started and running on the basepaths to force errors is the way to do that.

S

we'll agree to disagree...
no way you do that in front of Vlad with no outs.  If our 4-5-6 can't score a guy from 3rd with 3 outs, we won't win anyways.
Howie Walks!
What's next?  Dogs and cats living together?!
they stayed away from him
with Alturdo up next.
Alturdo
I guess it is fair to just root for an injury-inducing HBP.
God ...
We can only hope
the way Sosh is managing this year...
Alfonso will be batting 3rd tomorrow.
yes!
Kotch in the on deck circle. Glad to see that here.
how many times
does alfonzo have to suck for us to release him
I was just thinking
Maybe waiting for Izturis to come back first? When's that supposed to happen anyway?
i think
once rivera comes back he wont be playing
that may be Monday...
God willing.
He was muttering...
something about Cinco de mayo and is it celebrated in o'Canada
let's go Murph!
ditto
DAMMIT
O'Muprhy
Do the right thing baby.....go yay-yay
or not
but at least it wasn't a K, thanks Alturdo
damn, that one was almost out
of the infield
too many holes in our lineup...
I ask again...who here agrees to a Miguel Cabrera for Wood and Kendrick trade if that is all they would take?
Actually, NO WAY, and here is why...
Miguel Cabrera is the closest thing to a Jose Guillen/Manny Ramirez headcase malcontent in baseball today.

As good as he is and as young as he is, the chances that he will want a different set of rules for him than for the other players means that he would not work out in the Angels clubhouse.

I don't know if he will go on to be the best player in baseball besides pujols, but I do know that his swagger will be incomaptible with all but the loosest group of apatheitc veterans and unimpressionable rookies.

how about
if they agree to take Alfonzo and Yan too?
As tremendous a hitter
as Miggy is, Kendrick/Wood have a chance to be a dominating double-play combo from around 2008 or '09 through 2012 or so, and possibly beyond.  That's of huge value.

Of course, that's theoretical, possible value, and Cabrera is pretty much guaranteed value.  So it's a tough question.  My gut is to hang on to our guys.

yeah, it is a tough one...
Pros:  Closest thing to Pujols and he's only 23 or so, Vlad won't be around forever it would be nice to pair him with a stud like this like the Red Sox 3-4 hitters and to have an heir apparent ready when he's gone, can play OF or 3B, we'd be pretty much guaranteed the most talented team in the West the next few years.

Cons:  Like Rev said, his attitude has been a question mark, Wood seems mature beyond his years, Kendrick has hit for a high average everywhere he's been and looks comfortable so far.

i'd do it
in a second
NO!
You can't trade both Kendrick and Wood.  I would send Wood before Kendrick and I would think Wood is the more attractive commodity when sending away the production Of Cabrera.

and like the Rev said Cabrera is close to Manny in his lack of concentration but I think at this point the offense would be worth the headaches associated with a 23 superstar.

i think
that winning baseball games would take away alot of that "headache" for me.
And also
Anytime you trade TWO prospects for a grade A player - you are doubly haunted - what if one is a bust but one is a superstar and MigCab suddenly twists something near some tendon?

Howie for Miggy-C - MAYBE
Wood for him - MAYBE

But not both.

put it this way....
if they did it, I wouldn't blame them, and if they don't I wouldn't blame them.

It would sure be nice being the favorite in the AL though.  Basically, since he's only 23 and a superstar, we'd be getting the ultimate 'can't miss' prospect for two guys that may be great, may be mediocre.

Tough call for a GM though.  I do like Wood and Kendrick, no doubt.

wow
you said that m cabrera might twist something.  i'm pretty sure there is an equal chance of wood or kendrick twisting something as anyone else.  the fact that you said that you might not even trade kendrick OR wood one-for-one is just plain silly.  cabrera has a GREAT chance to be one of the best players in baseball over the next 15 years, and youre saying that you wouldnt even take the chance of trading ONE of our players who is UNPROVEN and at best has a CHANCE of being as good as miguel in the next 15 years.  that sounds alot like retardation to me.
What I meant was
if you only get one player in a trade, one injury means you got NOTHING in the trade.

IF you give up two players ina  trade and one is a bust, you still traded a way a player who was not a bust.

ok
that makes more sense, but i would still give them any two of our "prospects" for a already proven superstar, 2-time all-star, silver slugger, (I can go on and on) 23-year old.
Agree, not both
Also, I'm pleased to hear you acknowledge the importance of a player's clubhouse demeanor to the ultimate winning or losing of the franchise. You seemed to pushing hard for Manny so I wasn't sure whether you were acknowledging this kind of stuff...This is one of the big reasons I generally frown on bringing in "big name" veterans to this core group of players (Salmon, Erstad, G.A., etc.) because in most cases they won't fit in.

I think Vlad is different because he's very unassuming and has a certain innocent, child-like quality that makes him less threatening than other superstars.

The post above was in response to the Rev.
Vlad Childlike?
I hung with the team on night and the dude is NOT childlike, he is deferred to by everyone, He speaks English and hangs out as one of the guys - but they all defer to him. Him and Erstad.

There was no doubt who the MAN was. He drank Coronas all night, his girl had cocktails, he never got out of hsi seat - never had to. But he hung with Mathis, Saunders and Josh Paul like they were the sprkplugs on the whole damn engine

I think
he meant that Vlad is pretty light hearted etc
atta boy esteban
doing what you do best
guy's gotta go with his strength
OOHHHHHH the humiliation.......
Kendrick and Wood for Adam Eaton?
ESTEBAN YAN
He almost had trade value again before that last inning...
Figgy
Wicked Wheels
man
somebody put something in Figgy's water today.
ga
needs a day off
this WAS his day off
he got to DH...
true
hopefully he gets going again soon
YAN CAN
go anytime now
actually feel bad for the guy...
but yeah, he's not good.
Esteban Yan
is the worst.
if quinlan is healthy...
why isnt he playing over alfonzo
because
Alfonso provides the requisit amount of veteran leadership with Ersty and GA not in between the lines.
Because
  1. Chad Guadin and the A's are CHUMPS and hit his elbow, bruising it, he is in the dugout with a tight wrap around it.
  2. Scioscia has not Finley to love and believe in and Alturdo is the next best overpaid stump for Mikey to love.
I'm just glad
things are back to normal.

Did anyone else know that the Royals were offered Alex Rios numerous times in deals for pitching? I can hardly believe that the Royals had a hard time identifing talent!

LOL
they just showed a picture of Sosh.....he WASN'T picking his upper lip but he was sure twitching and moving his leg up and down. Poor Mikey, he looks stunned!!
what is
physioc's problem?..i know we are down by 9 runs..but can the guy get excited for mike napoli's double?
Steve Physioc
He can only get excited about RECOUNTING the past.

HE cannot for the life of him accurately describe what is happening in the moment, nor emote what it may or not may be worth...

what about yesterday...
didn't he get all excited about Napoli & Murphy with their "firsts"?? or was that all Hud??
when he is actually calling
the play as it happens..he is unable to put things together
He got excited
RECOUNTING all of the firsts.
I seem to remember
hearing something about playing the hottest bats.  I might be missing something but this should leave Napoli starting over Molina.  Have I missed some of JOMO's at bats?
Even
JOMO has missed some of his own at-bats...
You said it, Rev!
OH BOY...bases loaded...no outs
Painfull....
It just keeps getting worse!

S

YAHOO GAMEDAy
Updated enough to show Romero in an Angels hat, but still show Bengie with an Angels hat on.
that because Bengie...
will always be an Angel!

Ladies and gentleman, your 2006 cheasy post of the year!

and
spelled it wrong to make it even cheesier.
BENGIE MOLINA
Golden Sombrero.
Who starts at 3B tomorrow?
If Q can play the field do you start him at 3B and Howie at 1B or do you take a chance and subject Howie to his first game at 3B on the turf?  I am not even going to give a thought to Alfonso being in the lineup again.
yeah but
Scioscia will give thought to it...
Lets hope
its after dinner when he is thinking clearly.  I would hate for him to make any decisions tonight before he has taken care of himself.
In case anyone is bored with the blowout
Buffalo and Ottowa are about to go into OT over on OLN.
That didn't take long
If there's any other hockey fans here, hope you didn't blink. Buffalo takes it in 18 seconds.
What's Hockey?
Kennedy...
must have went out and got coked up with Glaus last night.
that won't get old
He needs to
party a little more tonight.  Maybe he will start hitting again.
Thank God
it's finally over.
