Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Game 29/162

Game Thread - Angels at Tigers - 10 a.m.
Kevin Gregg vs. Justin Verlander

Star-divide

Let's hope Jose Molina (or Mike Napoli filling in for the demoted Jeff Mathis) can catch the sinkerball pitches of the Kid from Corvalis, Oregon (drink everytime pathetic Steve Physioc says CORVALIS in fake entusiasm). Oh and then there is the hopes about our offense, but why wish for things that will just take care of themselves...

Scouting Report
NO Angel batters have faced Verlander
According, at least, to Yahoo Sports, oops, I mean "My Inside Sources"

To add insult to injury, Scott Spiezio hit his third homerun of the season last night for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Roster Moves/Today's Line-up
Mike Napoli is in today's line-up.  And so is center fielder TOMMY MURPHY, who was called up from Salt Lake along with Napoli.  Kotch is at first base, Kendrick at DH.

Line-up:

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/gameTrax?gameId=260504106

Wow
Kennedy's batting fifth???? It's about time.

Any news on who Murphy is replacing?

Anyone know a bookie
That will give odds on Verlander throwing a no-hitter?
Verlander...
Watch out, that kid has got some electric stuff. Tops out at 100-101 mph with a mean curve too.
Murphy
Anyone know who was moved down, other than Mathis?

S

POSSIBLY BOOTCHECK OR ERSTY ON THE DL
Move
Los Angeles Angels - Placed pitcher Chris Bootcheck on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring; recalled outfielder Tommy Murphy from Salt Lake of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).
Don't worry about Spiezio
He's working for peanuts right now. Thats a price we couldn't get him at.He has to put grub on his plate with this Mlb audition he is performing.

Glaus is the one we let get away. I was pissed about that.

Oh well.

Me picks-

Us: 5/10

them: 3/8

Bootcheck's injury.
I couldn't find where anyone had already said this on here, but Terry said in the pregame that the way that Bootcheck hurt himself was on the run from the bullpen to the fight. Pulled a hamstring.
Kendry Morales
Got a double off of Verlander in the Futures Game last year.

Just FYI.

Gee, Tommy Murphy ... I don't know.

what
a lineup!!!
They weren't kidding
When they said to expect some major changes... wow.
could
kevin gregg be our best pitcher right now?
let's go Halos!
kennedy single
it's about time he batted higher in the lineup...
way to go
mono boy
GIDP
way to go, Single Malt.
that's KENDRICK
with a capital "K".
Dude what's with the bad vibes? Why the pessimism?
easy, tiger
i'm just stating the obvious, not flushing the season down the toilet and declaring my retirement.
Yet.
You got it RIGHT on that one, Shredder
Mister Optimism gets to pick and choose who he scolds - I think YESWECAN is Steve Physioc in disguise.
you guys are too smart to talk so dumb
you both know the difference between SCOLDING and DECLARING THE END OF THE WORLD.

the angels deserve some heat right now, but they don't deserve our desertion of them.

true
and IF that happens, it certainly won't happen until a reasonable time to do so, which does not include a month into the season.

see you next year! we're gonna miss you!

HOME RUN!!!!!!!!
NAPOLI!!!!!!!!!
c'mon
Nappy!
Napoli
Nice!!!
HOLY S****!
Nap
Nice!!!!!!
BOOMSHAKALAKA!
Wow!
Nice debut!
holy napoli!
Way To Go Napoli !!
First Big League AB is a HR ! Way to make Stoneman and Scioscia look like geniuses for bringing you up to the Show !
was that
his first ML AB?
nevermind
WOW
That Homerun by Napoli went well with my first sip of coffee.

Kudos to Rex Hudler for calling that shot - we give him a lot of shit but he is enthusiastic (unlike schoolmarm Physioc) and called that one bravely.

you're up early, my man
did an auction close?
Whatta play!
Nice on, OC.
NO NO NO
Don't be entusiastic, don't get my hopes up!
I wanna eat
New diet.  I don't eat during losing streaks.  From the last out of a second straight loss, I can't eat until the last out of the next win from now on.
In Memoriam
LA Seitz, who was on hunger strike for 3 months....
Vlad
Is Vlad one of the dumbest runners in baseball? Yes.
Anyone else on MLB tv?
I love that Yogi Berra ad.
the
Aflac one?
tie game
let's go, Gregg...
OMG
What has infected Kotchman?!?!
Shocker!!!!
Mono goes yard? What is this world coming to?
Kotch&theMan
comes outta the closet and relaxes
Love it
I switch on mlb.tv and Kotch drills one out of the yard
Hay Matt
where in UK are you?
Reading, Berks
Well, just outside
nice
I'm in London.

Royals fan?

Yep
Used to have a season ticket when we were in Div 2 a few years back, haven't been much this year tho, only once I think.

Where in London are you? I lived in Chiswick til last weekend and before that in Bayswater

In
Hendon, Arsenal fan.
Going
to Paris?
Yes...
If I can get a ticket for less than the £1200 i've been quoted!
Ouch!
I heard the Eurostar had sold out as well, before the Villareal game
OH. MY. GOD.
FIRE IN THE CITY
maybe he knew he was next
to get sent to the Auto Club. in any case, way to go Casey!
Casey
Proving that even with mono, a guy can still stroke his bat.
WOWIE
Are these guys actually playing baseball??
Who did Murphy come up for?
Bootcheck?
Can't see him on the roster anymore
Bootcheck DL'ed
Hamstring.
actually
he was sent to the minors, wasn't he?
oops
you're right. got confused. strained hammy.
Tommy Murphy!
WTG, kid.
what's with the kids today?
maybe this shakeup has done something?
If it was a scare tactic...
It's working!!!
Captain Murphy
Nice hit, buddy.
Who'd a thunk it?
Two English Angels fans!
good on ya!
how the hell did you guys become Angel fans? (excuse me if you guys have explained before)
Oddly enough
I have no idea why! They started showing games live here in 1997, and at some point I started looking out for Angels scores. Finally got to a game in 2002.
Went to LA in '98
Stayed with some friends who went to Angels games occasionally so we went along to one. I loved it, but only really started following the team last season, so I missed the WS.

Then my girlfriend who I met on my masters course lives in Yorba Linda and goes to games quite often too so that cemented it

And
I've never met another Angel fan from the UK, and I get very angry with the amount on Yankees caps you see in the UK - one of these days I'm gonna ask one of them if they can name any of the starting 9 for the Yanks
forgive my ignorance
but I didn't even know people in the UK were into baseball. is it popular at all or are you guys complete anomalies?
Anomalies
Pretty much, none of my friends are into it
In the UK
you can get Yankees hats in pretty much every colour and style at any sports/fashion store. Half the people probably don't even know what the logo is of
americana chic
basically
The Sunday night ESPN games are on here live on tv, starting at 1am. A lot of students, insomniacs and wastrels have taken to the game.
I fit in
to the third category.
WASTRELS
So that would be the Irish then, right?

(Rev O'McHalofan)

Irish!?!?!?
Don't get me started on politics....
Bait Bait Bait
Okay I will stop, but am inspired to photoshop Gerry Adams with an Angels cap on.
Ouch
Try an A's cap, preferably with a noose around his neck!
Student for me
But I started watching on mlb.tv last year in the freeway series rather than C5 which usually has a pretty average game on
on the cap front
I have six Angels caps, and I have only ever seen one other in this country, a pre '02  'wings' model.
fashion
the yankee thing is just fashion. it's a trendy "i dig new york, so i'm cooler than you" kind of thing.

i've never met anyone from europe who even follows baseball casually, so i bet if you ask anyone with a NY cap who jason giambi is, they might say "an italian MP".

Yep
No doubt
Don't let the Bronx banter bother you
You can go to New York, Yankee Stadium and find people that don't know jack about the team on their crappy looking caps.
WoW
to have your own golfing place in Georgia
Uh...
Could I actually be smiling right now?
Fizz & Hud
are on the nickname road...wonder what they are going to come up with for Murphy & Napoli???
knowing those geniuses
it'll be "Murph" and "Nappy"
Murphy's nickname
they've decided is going to be Happy Murphy... haha.  That kid cant' stop smiling!
Murphy
I call him Captain Murphy, named after the character in "Sealab 2021."
lets just hope
we never have to call him murphy's law.
Nappy ( the General?) has a
thong holding his mask on his head
With those shades
Gregg looks like he just stepped out of a rap vid
one run, 3 hits allowed through 5
way to go, Gregg!

let's get some more RUNS

Schedule question
When did the Angels last play a double header, I dont remember any in the last few years.
Last season
agianst Detroit, after a Friday rainout in April, two on Saturday, they split.
Thanks
Didn't recall that. I suppose playing in Cal means not many games get rained out, unlike the east coast.
VERY RARE
Rainouts hardly ever happen here.
Yay
I love to see this!
Is Rex holding..
unopened letters to his head?

Way to go Howie

Damn
Sorry I missed that one.

ALRIGHT SALT LAKE !

dammit
I wish I had a TV at work
Rex
Is on fire tonight, as long as he doesn't call one for the Tigers it's fine by me
I hope
Scioscia doesn't insist on taking Gregg out now that he's pitched 6
Howie Lewis
brings the News.
Nice ring to it
Like those catchy melodies from your favorite 80s band.

The power of love?

what's up boys???
Just watched the first hour or so at Buffalo Wild Wings.  Now back at work with just game center on cbs.  The fire has been lit evidently!
the Hits
just like a hit record, the angels have a wide distribution of hits today -- everyone except Cabfare has one, so far.
And now
The OC does too
Amazing
how the absence of Alfonzo inproves the team. Who'd have predicted that?
I couldn't quite out my finger on it
but I think you just did!  :)
Oops..
that's "put" my finger on it!
POST OF THE DAY
Airmailed from the Isle itself!
difficult to predict
and harder to prove. there might be a direct connection, but one could also argue that it's really Napoli or Murphy being in the lineup that has caused today's success so far.
Boobs
Boobs is pitching for the Tigers.  Let's score some more runs.
We have to nip this misunderstanding in the bud!
I am the current day equivalent of Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York, CANT STAND THE IRISH!
Pogue Mahone
We don't think much of you either.
Murphy is a hitting machine!
Man I wish I could be watching this.
Rerun is on at 1900 on Fox
you'll know the outcome, but it's been a fun game to watch
It's a goodvibe Thursday baby!
I take a break from work and what do I see?

Yeah baby! Napoli and Kotch hit dongs!

Great pitching!

Go halos!

i'd love to see
boobs get manhandled right now.
(sorry, couldn't help it)
No oh-fers
good job, Cabrera
WAHOOOOOOOOO-- GO BIG DADDY!!
DAMN..the boys be playing ball!!!
WOO HOO!
woo-hoo
VLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD!
Suhhhhh-Weeet!!!!
Today's game has done wonders for my ulcer!
christ
best game of the season and it's in the middle of the day during the workweek
SORRY HIGZ>>>
I can hook up my webcam & IM it to you!!!
if you do....
I'll take it to! (just baseball though, I'm not a sexual predator)
methinks
thewebb doth protest too much...

ha, just kidding dude

that one must have been over my head...
don't get it
you said
you're not a sexual predator... it just sounded funny to hear somebody say that

BTW, Hamlet

oh, it's cool
I don't even have IM here at work and I have deadlines anyway. If I was watching the game I wouldn't get shit done. But thanks ladybug.
Does Vlad
Ever hit a HR that isn't in his wheelhouse as Hud calls it? Everytime he hits one Rex is like, 'that was right in his wheelhouse' Isn't a wheelhouse on a boat???
Vlad's wheelhouse
is between his ankles and his neck....pick a spot!!
Sometimes...
inboard sometimes outboard
this is soooo beautiful!
Does anyone have some info on Murphy?  Is it possible he will start in center from here on out?  How good is he?  Haven't heard much about him.

I f'n love the lineup today!

He was a shortstop for a while...
... Looks like he's a great asset to the OF though.
Murphy...
per the Angel's site (2005 season):
Enjoyed finest season as professional in second campaign with double-A Arkansas...Hit .288 (144/500) with 85 runs, 24 doubles, 11 triples, 17 home runs, 76 RBI and 26 stolen bases...Led Texas league in triples, ranked fourth in total bases (241) and fifth in extra-base hits (52)...Set career-bests in runs scored, home runs and RBI...Batted .331 (82/248) at home compared to .246 (62/252) on road...Tabbed as Organizational Defensive Player of the Month for July...Stole 25 plus bases for fourth consecutive season.
Murphy
Murphy is a tools guy who is considered the best athlete in the system.  Good speed, good arm, good defender, all that jazz.  Offensively, he never turned those tools into performance until last season, when he had an okay year at age 26 while repeating AA.

He could be a late bloomer, stranger things have happened, but the fact that he didn't start hitting until he was old for his leagues isn't a sign that he's going to be a star or anything.

That last sentence makes no sense
But I'm sure you know what I mean ...
got it...thanks
Gotta laugh
Anderson caught by Granderson
If you're a cricket fan..
Lillee ct Willey b Dilley
More
The bowler's Holding the batsman's Willey
a cricket afficionado?
I'm sure
you're more of a hurling fan, eh UK Halo?
Murphy
actually played for the B's yesterday (started in RF).

He had some pretty gaudy numbers .352/.398/.495 down there.

He'll be 27 in August...pretty old for a prospect.  Probably a 4-A player.  He's a switch hitter, so he's got that going for him.

I have to go out now
don't want any unpleasant surprises when i return, so lets hope Yan doesn't get to pitch.
What is Gregg's
Pitch count?
89
56 for strikes
Thanks
for the update!
According to Gameday
Pitches-strikes: Gregg 89-56
Career Game
for Kevin "three-Gs."
hell of a game Gregg!
I tip my cap.
7 strong innings
good jobb, Gregg!
Ggggregggg
I have never been a fan of Gregg's at all, but he pitched a hell of a game today.
Donnelly
Has been making me nervous since the pine tar incident.
yup
he has pretty much stunk since then.  Or even before then when they got him for licking his fingers.
Oh man...
I'm getting nervous.  2 men on, 0 outs.
MURPHY!!
WOW...what a catch!! too bad Kotchie couldnt hang on to the ball for a double play
Let's add a couple more
runs, that is.
Sure you don't mean...
add a couple more rookies?  Haha!
come on AK!
Oh my God
GA just laid off three consecutive pitches low and away.  Now I KNOW the apocalypse is here.
PLEASE, Frankie,
can we not play PERCY ball today??  My heart can't take it.  I NEED this win.
was kennedy's hit really a liner?
Easy catch?
LIGHT UP THAT HALO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lord, we needed this one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AMEN & HALLELUJAH!! BE HEALED!!!!!!!
yes we did....
Now only about 10 more.  Did I hear someone say today is a double header?
Not a save
But a 6-pitch, 1-2-3 inning for K-Rod is nice to see.
Juuuuuuuuuuuuust
another Halo Victory.
Panther of the game
