Pitcher Jeff Weaver is an Angel. The ink is dry.
No specifics, but I got a call from my most trusted source saying all the rumors are true, the hometown discount applies (albeit with an incentive-laden two-year deal) - that the geography won out for the Halos and the older brother of Jered told BoBo Boras to back off.
You will hear about Monday everywhere else as Stoneman scrambles over the weekend to adjust the 40-Man roster.
UPDATE: Let this strengthen suspicions about the Manny trade being on the front burner.
Kelvim Escobar, Steven Shell and Juan Rivera to Boston is the latest...

The one guy you can't include in a Manny trade
Is Rivera.Your LF/RF/DH situation would be an arthritic, a walking chiropractic commercial, and the worst left-fielder in baseball. Someone will definitely get hurt, and defensive substitutions will definitely be needed. And there's no one besides Juan around to do those jobs.
mattwelch - February 4, 2006
Actually...
if we got Manny, we'd have the worst LF in baseball. But I'd still take him.Ajax - February 4, 2006
That's who I meant
If trade, than cripple (G.A.), gimpy (Vlad), and butcher (Manny).mattwelch - February 4, 2006
As for Jeffie
A one-year deal (if that's the case) is fookin' brilliant. He's an extreme groundball pitcher and workhorse who pitched to a terrible infield defense last year, but a great one this year. Like Paul Byrd, except more of a stoner. Assuming we don't trade Escobar, that's a very fine rotation, with credible backups waiting in the wings at Triple A.Let's hear more about how Stoneman totally sux because of the Beane count!

Weaver: not a groundballer at all
His GB% for the last three years according to BP: 45%, 45%, 42%. Plus he did give up 35 HR last year, very few of them on ground balls.jayjaffe - February 7, 2006
Manny Mota
I recall the 6/11/72 (Pit @ LA) inside-the-park home run by Manny Mota being a groundball down the 3rd baseline. Rennie Stennett was playing his first career game in leftfield and fell down while chasing the groundball. The ball rolled past the Dodger bullpen. Stennett retrieved it in front of the Brewery (the plexiglas window on the centerfield side of the Dodger bullpen) as Mota motored home. Groundballs sometimes do turn into home runs!Stennett made up for this by scoring 2 runs and getting 2 rbis in the same game. Give up 2 on defense and help get 4 on offense is a net plus 2 for the game.

if the LA Times..
is right about who the Red Sox are asking for, it's way too much. However, if it's Kelvim Escobar, Steven Shell and Juan Rivera I say where do I sign. I love Escobar and Rivera is solid, but Manny at DH over Rivera is an obvious upgrade, and they both bad right handed so I don't see it messing that up. GA is still an above average LF.thewebb - February 4, 2006
Who's your 4th OF?
And who's your #2 starter? I would bet $20 that Escobar will be the best starter in the rotation this year.mattwelch - February 4, 2006
if you do this trade...
OF would be LF - GA, CF - Erstad, RF - Vlad with Manny at DH occasional LF and Figgins as super utility backup at all spots. D Mac would have to sac up and play 3rd and if he can't, then Fonzie or a prospect may have to step in. Hey wait a minute, that Fonzie trade is starting to make more sense! (I mean other than the obvious part of dumping Finley)thewebb - February 4, 2006

Kendrick and Kotchman for Manny. No way I'd give up Santana and anything else. Maybe Santana alone, maybe.thewebb - February 4, 2006
Good Christ you people are high
Kendrick is projected as a batting champion who plays a credible second base. Kotchman is seen as a Wally Joyner type. From 2007-2011 you could have both players for like $1 million a year, $2 million max ... and you want to trade that for a 34-year-old DH who costs $17 million? That's just crazy talk. Especially since AK leaves in '07, which is right when Kendrick will be ready. It's not sure yet that Callaspo will be a good player.mattwelch - February 4, 2006

I'm all for being good for the next 10-15 years instead of just the next 2-3. Once again, I just hope the same people saying this aren't the same people calling Stoneman an idiot when/if our offense sucks this year for not getting Manny.I just know there have been a lot of can't miss prospects that have missed and missed badly. I think Wood is definitely untouchable, as well as Santana, I just haven't seen much of Kendrick. It he's that good, it's good to hear. Let's hold off on the next Tony Gwynn talk until he plays a Major League game though.
One thing I do not want to see is us wasting the prime years of Vlad by not giving him any protection. If we don't get anyone else, Scoiscia better not bat GA 3 and Vlad 4 or I might flip!
Now I know you're as proKotchman as it gets, but would you do Callaspo and Kotchman for Manny then?

Same story with Glaus
I wasn't worried when they let Glaus leave, as we all knew it was going to be D-Mac one way or another.scareduck - February 4, 2006
No.
Quality minimum-salary players with huge upsides are the most precious chits in baseball. The 1980s and even early-'90s Angels could have won a few more division titles had they not pissed away Carney Lansford, Willie Mays Aikens, Rance Mulliniks, Dickie Thon, Tom Brunansky, Brian Harper, Mark McLemore and Dante Bichette ... for the quick-fix "solutions" of Al Cowens, Tim Foli, Butch Hobson, Todd Cruz, Rob Wilfong, Ron Tingley, Ken Forsch, Doug Corbett, Dave Parker and one good year of Ken Forsch.Yes, sometimes can't-miss guys fall a little short (Dick Schofield is the best example I can remember); but just because a guy doesn't become the next Willie Mays doesn't mean he ain't useful, especially when he's cheap. Jack Howell (to throw out one "disappointment") should have been a highly productive 70% starter (sitting against lefties), but because he was so "disappointing" he was traded for Shawn freakin' Abner, then we threw millions to watch Gary Gaetti suck eggs.
Besides, Casey Kotchman is the only person in the Angels organization ready to provide plus offense at 1B in 2006. You'd be improving your DH production by kneecapping 1B. Unwise all around.
mattwelch - February 4, 2006
One too many Ken Forsches there
... but yeah, the Manny trades as proposed sound profoundly stupid, at least some of them do, and the "we'll give you Manny if we can back up our truck at Salt Lake" garbage is the most insulting of all.In other news, goddamn Blogger's broken again.

Other Manny Deal Killers
Stoneman has not only refused to include the team's premier prospects in a Manny deal, but he's also refused to pay ALL of Manny's salary, insisting that Boston pick up part of the tab. It's also been reported that Manny would want to negotiate an EXTENSION with his new team before approving any trade (remember, Manny can veto any trade).
And it's been reported that there's NO WAY Manny will DH full time. He wants to play in the field.
Hard to see how a Manny deal will ever be consumated with the Angels (or any other team, for that matter).
Ox Wiebe - February 4, 2006
New Agent
Manny switched agents a little while a go and the agent wont get paid unless Manny signs an extention. I bet you Manny drops that if it means he can go to Anaheim. Having Manny spell Anderson in LF isn't as awful as you thing. Manny does make some ridiculous SportsCenter defensive misques, but his Range Factor and Zone Rating are just about average and he was one of the league leaders in outfield assists last year, admittedly because he knows how to play the green monster well. I think Boston would be willing to take on Erstad's or Alfonso's salary (see Lowell, Mike) to make this deal happen.wintersej - February 4, 2006
Manny
I'm almost at the point where I'd turn down any deal that wasn't an obvious winner for the Angels. And I mean obvious to everyone. I just don't see him being dominant after this year, and I've never seen the Angels with a system as stacked as it is right now. It might sound stupid, but I really want to see all of these guys that we've been talking about play for the Angels.LA Seitz - February 4, 2006
Don't trade anybody

Well now, let's not be hasty
IF you can clear out expensive deadwood (Erstad/Cabrera/Yan), and you can teach Kendry Morales to be a not-horrible left fielder, then I surely wouldn't mind to have a RHB who can still crush the ball like Manny.mattwelch - February 4, 2006
no way..
They'll be able to trade him for guys on the big club like that, but yeah that'd obviously be a no brainer. Crummy thing is the Red Sox signed Gonzalez to play SS and traded one of the highest rated prospects in the game among others for Coco Crisp, so their interent in Cabrera and/or Erstad at this point would probably be zero unless they're willing to take Erstad on in LF.I'm totally fine with not doing this trade in any form, I hope these guys come fast especially on offense so someone can start protecting Vlad. Anyone that feels their 'plugged in' enough to have a valid prediction of who the 25 man roster out of camp will be? I have a feeling '07 will be the year these guys really make a splash. I hope the big name prospects rake at at least triple A this year. Lineup if Morales isn't on the big club:
Figgins - 3B
Cabrera - SS (he'll bitch otherwise)
Vlad - RF
GA - LF
Guillen - DH (D-Mac righties unless he's hurt or Guillen is tearing it up)
Erstad - CF
Kotchman - 1B (obviously move him up if he's tears it up but why not start him low?)
Molina/Mathis - C
Kennedy - 2B

Just say no to Manny
Just to be on the record. Keep Manny Ramirez off of the Angels. There are some stealth Red Sox fans promoting Man Ram here. The Angels do NOT need Manny's salary or defense.I was at the Big A picking out season seats on Wednesday. The optimism of fellow Angel fans was contagious. The 2006 Halos are going to go deep into October WITHOUT Manny Ramirez. The Angels do not need him. Put my money where my mouth is? I already paid Arte. "Just another Halo victory!"

Hear, Hear
Manny would hurt the Angels more than he would help them. There's a reason that so many people in California have stopped smoking cigarettes -- they lead to cancer! And we're a health conscious bunch out here in the West. The Red Sox offers so far have been insulting. I wouldn't trade Santana straight up for that guy. Agree that we don't need him. If you want to re-open talks with KC about Sweeney, then I'll listen, but PLEASE, no Manny Ramirez.

Yetijuice - February 5, 2006
fine with me...
The great thing is Stoneman appears to be doing what he should be doing. Acting uninterested unless he gets blown away by an offer. I'm not in the camp that thinks the Red Sox are going to be down this year, just to put that on record. Their starting pitching should be better than last year, and there should be very little, if any drop off from Damon to Coco. If they still have Ortiz/Manny at 3-4, I think they're better than the Yankees at this point. (assuming Manny doesn't go off the deep end one of these years or just up and retire, wouldn't shock me) If you take Manny away, Ortiz doesn't see a pitch so it basically would kill both of their numbers. Kind of like what happened to Vlad last year. The As and us are pretty much neck and neck. Both defenses should be solid and both pitching staffs should be as well. The one advantage we have is we don't have any flakes or punks. (like Bradley for instance)

Rumor Has It
Shortly after reading the Rev's post that Jeff Weaver was about to become an Angel I told my 5 year old son Roger what was on the coconut wireless. I then checked some other websites and did not see any breaking news about the Dream Weaver. I have not told anybody else what the Rev saw in his crystal ball.Twenty years ago I took a boat trip from Surat Thani to Koh Samui in southern Thailand. After disembarking I checked for mail at the Na Thon post office. I then browsed for used books in an open-air market. A fellow American came up to me and said the manager of the beach hut where he was staying had described to him the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger. This was prior to there being wide-spread television on Koh Samui. This tale had a ring of truth to it. I passed the word on to other expats on Lamai Beach with the caveat that the story was not confirmed. The following day the Bangkok Post newspaper confirmed the tragic story.
That was a rumor I passed on after receiving it in person. I am old fashioned to think that in person is more concrete than hearing about it on the internet. In my Air Force days the rumors were correct about one-third of the time. I am confident that the Rev has a batting average higher than that.
If Jeff and Jared Weaver are in the same rotation the Angels could be called the Dream Weavers of Anaheim. Yes, for the record I was at the Big A on 9/17/67 when Reggie Jackson hit his first major league home run off of Jim Weaver. Being at that game was one of the dividends I got for belonging to the Junior Angels Club! Somewheres in our garage I have a wide-angle b & w photo of Reggie-ru about to cross home plate after hitting his only home run as a member of the Kansas City A's. And 17 years later to the day I saw Reggie Jackson hit his 500th career home run off of Bud Black of the Royals. There was a Kansas City/Anaheim connection for both of those milestone home runs.

Tic.....
... Toc...Tic ...Toc...Your credibility has been bitch-slapped .
The Empire - February 10, 2006
Huh?
You have to have credibility before you lose it.Here's how I see it:
A month or so ago, there was minor rumblings of the Angels possibly being interested in Weaver. Very minor, but they were out there.
Then a week ago (either the day of or the day before Rev reported that his "source" said Weaver was a done deal) the LA Times had a blurb saying the Angels are again interested in Weaver.
I think Rev thought "Hell, I'll "break" the story and report it as finalized before anything happens." If he's right, big deal, he put 1 and 1 together and rolled the dice. Now iff he's wrong, what does he have to lose? It's not like he's some credible reporter anyway. And if he's wrong, he can make up some b.s. excuse and blame it on his "source".
