Five Questions

  1. Long-term, is it time to turn Shields into a starter?
  2. Your 2006 Angel bullpen: Is Donnelly in it?
  3. If Bengie can get a 4-year $24 million dollar contract, should the Angels offer him 3 years, $18 million?
  4. We can re-sign Washburn (4 years, $30 million) or Byrd (2 years, $12 million). Who do we pick?
  5. Arizona offers us Glaus for McPherson. You biting?

i'll play along
  1. Yes
  2. No chance in hell, unless pine  tar is legalized
  3. Let him walk
  4. Washburn will not be re=signed at that price. Byrd at 1-year, 5.5 million is about right.
  5. Hell yes.
Okay...
  1. No.  The Angels have Colon, Escobar, Lackey, and Santana returning next year for sure, with Saunders getting ready.  They don't need another starter.
  2. I don't know.  I suspect that what's going wrong can't be fixed, but we won't know for sure until spring training next year.
  3. Why would Molina take a smaller deal with the Angels than he could get elsewhere?
  4. Washburn.
  5. Uh, no.
Answers
  1. Only if you're not planning on bringing back Washburn or Byrd.
  2. In spring training, I think he is.  He'll have to earn a job, though.
  3. No.  I don't really bring him back under almost any circumstances outside of a one year deal.  I'm fine turning the job over to Mathis next season.
  4. Byrd.
  5. No.
Ohhh fun!
  1. No. I don't see any openings in the rotation for the next few seasons.
  2. No. He's 34 years old. The collapse was not impossible to see coming.
  3. No. There's no need to long-term any catcher with Mathis on the way.
  4. I wish we could sign Washburn for $7.5 per. I would be wary of signing Byrd to anything more than a one-year deal.
  5. Nope. Glaus' shoulder is going to shut him down in the future. Maybe not this year, maybe not next year, but someday... someday...

  1.  No, I don't see any room in the rotation for him.
  2. No freakin way
  3. No. Mathis is not that far away and we have too many catchers anyways
  4. Washburn
  5. No Glaus would be just as likely to leave again in another few years.  We might as well hold on to McPherson.
keep tokin' with Hud
  1. No, because right now he wouldn't make it out of the first inning.
  2. Not sure. If he gets his shit together immediately, then yes. If he continues to fail miserably, then I'd say "make him prove it in spring training."
  3. The Angels need to keep Bengie, because no other catcher can hit -- at all. Offer him something, but don't lowball him because you think he might take a homer deal. He won't. Why should he?
  4. Washburn
  5. Glaus is a proven hitter, McP isn't. They're both fragile. I'll take Glaus.
Mal idees
  1. Colon, Escobar, Lackey, Santana, probably Washburn ... and also Saunders, Weaver and Bootcheck ... so, no.
  2. Do they need someone to clean out the toilets?
  3. Oh my gawd hell nah. Did you see him try to catch baseballs last night? Does that body look like it will age well? Is there not a very good prospect just up from Triple A who's a better defender right now? Aren't there more pressing needs for that money?
  4. Wash in a walk. Better pitcher at his best, younger, left-handeder, bro-er.
  5. My fist, with laughter.

  1. Not unless you want to redo the whole bullpen outside of Frankie.
  2. Yes, but he's no longer a trusted guy.
  3. Mu.  "Answer yes or no, have you stopped beating your wife?"
  4. No lefty in the rotation?  Byrd for two years is dangerous; how likely is he to make it to 37 without serious injury?
  5. No way, Jose.
