Well that is how it is supposed to happen every game.
Washburn gets out of trouble early and settles into a groove. The offense hardly ever goes quietly and has a little pop to it.
If you want to get picky about Vlad not getting a hit
OR Donnelly giving up long outs
OR Roenicke sending Finley (who got lucky on the bad defense at the plate),
then I can get picky about Ichiro making the greatest catch I have ever seen to rob Garret of his 2nd homerun
OR A.K.'s butterflies leading to half of their baserunners and snuffing out a rally or two
OR D-Mac's double being a homerun in 26 other major league ballparks.
So there, we were the better team tonight.

You obviously never saw any of the 8,097,462 replays of Jim Edmonds' diving over the shoulder catch on the warning track against KC. Let's be blunt about the Ichiro catch, OK? He misplayed the ball. He thought it was going over the fence, climbed up the fence and then had to reach back because the ball wasn't close to going over the fence--it would have hit the wall if he didn't reach back for it. He only had to make the catch he did because he misjudged the ball. He could have put his back against the wall, lept and caught it.

eyeball to eyeball, memory to memory
At least Ichiro misjudged the ball, rather than regularly waiting a half-step in order to hotdog the catch, showboat style like applause-addicted clubhouse cancer Edmonds. Maybe I watched those games too well. Maybe Mister Popularity's teammates did as well.Rev Halofan - May 2, 2005
Huh?
Ichiro didn't misplay it - it would've hit the top of the wall and been a home run. He did have to catch the ball a little closer to his body than you'd normally want to, but that's nitpicking. It was an amazing play.Edmonds' catch was maybe a little better, but not by much.

the catch...
finally saw it. was the wind blowing? i don't think he misplayed the ball... he made the decision that he was not going to let it get out and he got in the best position to do that. then he adjusted when it got closer, much better than hoping to time it i think.Bruce Bochte - May 3, 2005
the catch
nice adjustment by Ichiro/Pele. Still a very good catch. In regards to Edmonds, at least Ichiro isn't rolling around on the warning track acting like he just snipered in his back.Great Catch Ichiro...
Nice acting job Edmonds...
go roll around somewhere else.

The catch
Reminded me of the Jordan lay-up against the Lakers in the 1991 Finals. Impressive athletic feat, but totally unneccesary. It will be shown over and over and over again, but it could have been made by simply running back to the wall and setting up for a slightly tougher than routine catch. Color me unimpressed.LA Seitz - May 3, 2005
