Damon's Domino: Manny Ramirez could still be an Angel

According to the latest Fox Sports Ken Rosenthal article, Johnny Damon signing with the Yankees puts more pressure on the Red Sox to trade Manny Ramirez for parts-n-prospects. That the Red Stockings' situation is now more precarious allows the GMs of other teams to operate from a position of strength in trade negotiations.

Didn't I predict this was going to happen?

How about Manny for Finley, Cabrera, Weaver and Shell? Or better yet, Bootcheck, another Scott Boras client.

Dude, position of STRENGTH
That means, we give them who WE want, not who THEY want. Weaver & Shell stay. They'll be lucky to get O-Cab/Finley/Callaspo, and we'll win a third straight crown.
Absolute garbage
This makes it LESS likely, not more, that they'll move Ramirez.  Why would they want to assuredly get less value in trade than they give up, especially now that they have to find a replacement for Damon?

Rosenthal is a decent reporter, but when he gives in to speculation like this he's out of his depth.

Like a good statistician
i wonder if you could quantify Rosenthal's effectiveness as a reporter - measure his objectivity (accuracy of predictions and analyses proven) verus this alleged headline grabbing.

Bet he is bettter than anyone else.

problematic trade scenario
I can't comment on Rosenthal's effectiveness, but the article proposes a trade involving Erstad, which, according to the LA Times, can't occur because he has a limited no-trade clause.
I thought it's 4 no-trade teams....
... and Boston ain't one of 'em.
Erstad & Boston
Reportedly, Boston's on Erstad's list.
Because they don't want a distraction?
If a star is insistent about being traded, it can cast a pall on a season, especially in a media hothouse. (I seem to recall something like that involving Gary Sheffield in L.A., though my memory isn't trustworthy.)

Not only that, Boston has three immediate holes that the Angels can fill -- CF (Erstad) SS (Cabrera) and future 2B (Callaspo). If I was Boston I'd make that deal in a heartbeat, try to sign a Reggie Sanders-type stopgap in LF (remember, they were suffering from Manny's defense out there), and see what kind of F.A. CF action is out there next year.

Manny Stays
I heard a Boston beat writer interviewed today and he said just the opposite, that the Sox were now LESS likely to trade Manny.

He believed the team could ill-afford to give up Manny's production and could ill-afford another public relations hit.

Maybe, maybe not
I can see it both ways.  Rosenthal just trying to make headlines/fill his weekly  (or whatever) article quota with something.

Interestingly, the Angels now do have guys that would make sense for a trade with boston...ie erstad (center), cabrera or izturis, and then fill in the blank.

Now, recent reports say Red Sox in running for Glaus.  If they get Glaus, I think they'd be willing to part with Manny for that CF, SS, and the fill in the blank.

Gammons on Manny -- 12/23/05
On the radio this morning, Peter Gammons said that he thought it was less likely than before that they would trade Manny.  He said Manny's contract isn't as onerous as believed because a sizeable portion of it is prorated.  Also, they've been underwhelmed by the offers they've received to this point.  So Manny stays and they attempt to rebuild around him . . . .
